1979 MK1 Carlton 2.0S
« on: July 22, 2015, 10:53:14 PM »
Hi everyone!

My Dad recently bought this lovely MK1 Carlton.

It was bought new in 1979 from Bedford Motors in Limerick City (Ireland) and has had the same owner up until my Dad got hold of it a few weeks ago. It was last taxed in 1992 and has spent the rest of its time tucked away in a garage. The previous owner used to start it once a month and drive it around the yard just to keep it oiled up.
After it was taken off the road he fitted Power Steering from an Opel Rekord.
Other than that it is completely standard.

Amazingly, there is no rust on the car anywhere. The car was garaged almost every night and was rarely driven in the wet.

The 2.0S engine is fairly good. It starts first turn of the key but does miss a little when it is cold. Once it warms up, it's fine. The crankshaft seal is leaking slightly as is the rear diff seal. These will be done in time.

The plans for it at the moment are to replace all 4 tyres and the spare and replace the rear rubber brake pipe as there is a bit of a bulge in it. Other than that there isn't a lot that needs doing.

So 13 years on the road and 23 years barely used !. Looks very healthy. Not many cars ever see a garage these days !.
1993 2.0 CD(X)i Auto Estate (Rioja Red very little tin worm & reasonable paint).
RIP - 1992 2.0 CDXi Manual Estate (Spectral Blue with far too much tin worm, now only parts).

Old age means wondering: Do I really have to struggle to become an expert in something I might never need to do again.
