You can't rely on things being "automatic" Mel
sometimes you have to do things "manually"  ;)
If the above post contains spelling mistakes / grammatical errors / poor use of the quote function / a very weak retort, or is generally shyte; it's because I'm feked on a cocktail of drugs, homebrew and carb cleaner.sorry

Aaaargh, it's him again :o

I'll try the "Sweet Voice of Reason" yet again ::)

Technology has now reached the point where electronic logic systems (look it up ;)) often coupled with sophisticated mechanical engineering has removed the need for onerous manual tasks which were needed to attempt control over the early dangerously crude mechanisms.

Even our 20 year old cars had systems like this and were welcomed by the forward looking in the motoring community.

Only Luddites, Antiquarians and incurable nostalgics have clung to the "Old Ways Are Best" view point and tend to describe the technological advances as "Gay" ;D

Hmm, I suppose that there are some drawbacks to progress; once they had time on their hands due to the invention of washing machines etc. they got "uppity" ::)

Goto "control panel"
double left click "internet options icon"
then, on the general tab, under browsing submenu is a box "delete"...
single left click....
new box will apear called "delete browsing history"
decide what to keep ,delete the rest
(you can choose to not delete passwords etc if you wish)
that's on windows XP
any problems,I'd e happy to talk you through it by phone or email  ;)

If you have another version of windows, it's pretty much the same but I'll have to fire up laptop or Mrs Builders number cruncher for vista & windows 7

Don't mention Windows Vista on a nice forum like this  ;D.

On the subject of deleting passwords. I never save them as then there is more chance I remember them and less chance a hacker can find them.
1993 2.0 CD(X)i Auto Estate (Rioja Red very little tin worm & reasonable paint).
RIP - 1992 2.0 CDXi Manual Estate (Spectral Blue with far too much tin worm, now only parts).

Old age means wondering: Do I really have to struggle to become an expert in something I might never need to do again.

It's OK, I've already deleted browsing history and everything seems to be working again.
Thanks for your time though Dave :)

I followed your instructions this time Dave rather than just deleting the browsing history, it seemed to spend a lot of time deleting 'cookies' and the PC now seems a bit faster (it is windows xp)

The pc has a regular Microsoft Security Essentials scan with a deep scan (takes 3 hours ::)) every week or so.

I'm rather puzzled that it seems to be unique to my PC since no one else has reported the same problem !!

XP is a little old hat now and sadly won't be supported by microsoft past 2014  :'(
that's a real shame because there's alot of software I use that runs well on XP.

from what you say in the above post, I'm wondering how clogged your pc is  :o
You can set explorer 8 to delete its internet history when it shuts down .(or are you using google ? firefox ?)
simply by ticking the box above/left of the delete button in internet options. It will then do it automatically

When was the last time your pc was de-fragmented ?  :P

I feel another "how too" cumming up  :D

security essentials is excellent free software, but not perfect.I use it myself.
I have a vast "stock" of software and hardware should you feel your PC is running slowly
or need any advice/help
(I look after all our families IT needs and some business e.p.o.s and IT ,strange I know,me being a builder)

Ah IE, the root of all evils! With IE10 they've finally managed to start getting it right.

Will definitely be a browser based issue, do you have any plugins/browser bar type things(Add ons)?

I updated my AVG anti virus and the firewall will not allow internet explorer to work at all in any settings so I have to use Chrome now which seems a lot faster and better because in explorer I was getting 'word lag' in that when I was typing quickly letters and spaces were sometimes missed so I had to type really slowly! Dont get none of those problems in Chrome.

It's still doing it on random occasions ::)

Or the hard drive is badly fragmented ,has bad sectors, corrupt or failing  :-\

Did a disk defrag. a couple of days ago !

Only got the same Google and Yahoo bars that have been there for years without causing any problem and no new 'Add ons' !

Do you have many programs that you still use on the pc ?
if so, do you have back up copies to re install ? (should you need to)
have you backed up your important documents recently ?

Only got the same Google and Yahoo bars that have been there for years without causing any problem and no new 'Add ons' !

so your PC has not been formatted in this time ?
that would still suggest ...
the hard drive ,has bad sectors, corrupt or failing  :-\

or corrupted registry  :-\
you could try a free registry tidy up program like regscrubxp>>>
http://files5.majorgeeks.com/files/aaea265a9054b3b8c5df99c64685ec2e/registry/regscrubxpsetup_3.2.exe
also , is your pc up to date with windows update ?
flash and java up to date ?

Just done a chkdsk without any reported problems !

Incidentally, the hard disk has 15 GB of free space.

I get automatic updates; quite alarming, because I often wonder what the bloody hell is going on when the activity light suddenly bursts into sustained operation :o

Do you still reckon that a registry tidy should be done ?

 good  :)

still does not prove the hard drive is not failing though  :P

that should be performed an a regular basis, along with disc cleanup and disc defragmantation

Just run the Registry scrub, as recommended :)

It came up with a screen and a half of what it reckoned was superfluous stuff which was duly removed.

Let's hope that my PC had just become 'A bit of a slag' but has now 'Scrubbed up nice' because it seems to be a bit faster and the 'Show unread posts' is presently working 8)

SSSShhhhh.....
Don't jinx it  ;D

only a page and a half is good, I'd expect 1000+ errors in 2 years
