Members list by county?
« on: March 09, 2012, 10:20:41 AM »
We see all these threads from mainly or mostly 'unknown' people and not knowing where they are, wondering if its possible to have them listed somewhere by county, the idea being you do at least know who is close by. Possibly updating as the administrator adds and deletes members. I know you can select each one and find out where they are from but I suspect many members do not post at all. might mean a lot of work though?.......

I think established members probably do know where most people are but most dont I suspect.

I think that I am the only one on here that resides in south Wales.

Mmm how do I do it. Could put Surrey under my name. Same place where kevinfourlegs puts the text about being the only member with four legs.

Everybody knows which county I'm in! Thats why I chose it. If I had been on the London side of the River Medway I would have been Kentish man.

Who else is in Kent besides Landbarge & Ellliott and your rough location? Not sure if Murph and Carlton Mad are in Kent or outer London.

There was a Carlton estate for sale in Pembrokeshire about a year or so ago. You cannot be the only Carlton owner there.

Pembrokeshire is the other side of Wales  ;D  Since I have had my Carltons, I haven't seen any in Wales  :(  I did see another in Southend, but that's not in Wales.

Forgot to say. Yes man of kent - it would be a good idea to have a convenient list. I suspect that those of us in the home counties number quite highly and so the information would be more of a pleasantry. The need for members outside the home counties would be different - so as to be aware of who is their nearest member.

Perhaps a map with dots on it, different colour for time since last activity. We could then chase up, remote, inactive members who might have given up before discovering that there is now another member nearby. Powerpoint presentation anyone  ::).

Don't forget those that live outside the UK as well, although I do have my location listed.

I think there was a members map on ABS a while back but it didn't work too well, took ages to load up and then members locations weren't exactly accurate.
I think the 'location' in the side box should be sufficient, don't you?

I agree that location in the side box would be fine for members that are seen posting. But hunting around for other members without having a thread or post to find them in might be a challenge. List would suffice - as you say its no use if it defeats the band width.

This is really a question for the administrators and how easy it would be to have separate lists and keeping it updated.

Certainly having a location when you comment works but lots dont, so you do not know where they are.

Admin comments please..............can you do it?

I would've thought that is a relatively easy thing for the admin to do, having area sections would mae it so much easier to locate people in a particular area... We could always ask people to register in their appropiate section when they join us, if they're a serious member then they probably would do this.....
They'll just have to copy and paste the list and add their name to it....... SIMPLES....

The problem is that that would create a much larger forum homepage with alot more sections, some of which would not be used much - if at all.
Also we don't want to encourage 'mini forums' for select groups.

I have been asking for the old member map to be reinstated.  It's not something that any of us admins can do because it has to be installed onto the main server.

Most of the hardcore members have their locations either by their avatar or in their signature already so we simply need to encourage the rest to do likewise, or at the very least fill in the location field in their profile.

Perhaps on the profile page add a drop down list of counties with "other - please state" leading to a text box for the rare ones that are in the rest of the world.

You would then have to ask everyone to update their profiles. But I like drop down lists because it makes sure that the choices are valid/spelt correctly so easier to search. OK perhaps also a "prefer not to say" and "unknown" (not yet updated) option.

Even if everyone put where they are from under their names people would still need to know who they're looking for in the first place to know where they are from if you get my drift...
What if, instead of sections put up some stickys in the hi hello section with the areas as titles that way it would be just like half a dozen new threads.....I hope to think that we're all mature enough not to get all clicky and it would be a great help to see who is in our area or nearby...
