WELDING!!
« on: February 17, 2010, 12:17:18 PM »
Just a heads up for those of you in the south east i have decided to hang up my welding mask indefinately due to having found a decent dedicated and very reasonable chap to do it for me.
He will do just about every common area cut out and new metal filleted in including inner sill box sections chassis rails (front and rear), arches with guards/ fillets to prevent dirt and salt ingress, bulkhead/grommet areas etc etc.
That whole lot in an official body shop would cost a fortune! (Flash was quoted 1800 for sills and one chassis rail on his geezer at such an establishment)
We can have all the above done for around 700-800 plus panels (sills are 14 a side) so for less than a grand you CAN have a carlton (or anything else for that matter) that has less rust than when it was new!!! lol

The chap in question is undertaking a job for one of our members as we speak so there will be pics following shortly.
what would life be like if we all drove fwd cars? feckin boring that's what rear drive or bust

ahhhh grrrrrr ... welding!!!!    it seems that chassis and sills were an optional extra on the gsi's lol  - just spent 700 pounds (mates rates ) having both outer sills fitted, large patch on offside rear floor pan and masses of repair work on the rear chassis - completely gone.    had a quote of 800 just for the sills and a small patch on the rear ofside chassis leg which i turned down , got a friends garage to do it for me and it kept getting worse and worse, rear legs were cracked and mullered from previous repairs. they had it for a week!  now i finally have her back and can get her mot's wednesday  :-)

Get plenty of Waxoyl or anything similar into those cavities or itll all need doing again in two years.
Loads of cavity wax will make it last for a very long time as it sounds like they did a good job

So, what's the going rate for rear arch repair?
I've seen a GSi auto for sale, and all it needs are the rear arches repaired (panels included in the sale), and a couple of droplinks.
I've been assured the chassis rails and the rest of the underside is/are in very good order.

You fancy it Stemo?
Can't see myself getting it. Getting it back to Rainham, Essex from Lymington, Hants is putting me off bigtime.
Transportation makes a bargain car not so much of a bargain.

I'm very tempted by it, it's just the wrong time for me. I don't think the other half would be too happy if I bought another car while we're buying a house and paying for a wedding....although  :P

Whoever gets it though will be getting what looks like a decent car, for the money even if there are other areas that need attention it's still a good price.

I need some done this year... South coast ...

Need :

*bulkhead gromet areas (both sides)
*hole next to steering box in engine bay
*hole under expansion tank (can touch the plastic arch liner thru it)
*two holes in spare wheel well
*one patch on the sill driver side...

Whos this chap in the south EAST?   where abouts?   Seems like he might be reasonably priced for the above...

I'm still alive! I was going to come over to weld up Jonathans SD1 but with travel costs it was going to be a bit pricey... :-[

There are a lot of older cars alive and well over here. The french don't bother salting the roads over here unless it's knee-deep snow. Drive slow or crash!

I've actually seen several nice diesel carltons. I tell you, the cars these french chuck away ???. I was having a grand day out in a giant breakers yard the otherday, exploring as you do and I found a complete and fairly rust free escort mk1 sitting on the ground minus it's wheels....

I've really had enough of modern cars developing stupid problems that cost loads of money / pulled hair to repair so I now drive a mk1 Peugeot 309 with a Simca 1.1 petrol engine and 4 speed gearbox. Lovely. Had some fun de-bodging it. The idle mixture screw needle was snapped off so it was set to idle on the transit circuit and one of the weights in the distributor was stuck. It was just so nice to have no stupid broken wires to diagnose, just abused mechanical stuff to fix. Oh yeah, the MOT is every 2 years here and you only get a fail when the wheels are about to fall off. Seriously, you get an advisory for shagged ball joints or even holes in the sills. Just get it fixed sometime in the 2 years before your next test! ;D

Murph, are you still going to do the banger rally this year?

Go for proven technology every time! 50 years of driving has told me that. German cars pushing the boundaries of technology? YES. Thats why so many are breaking down. They need to to prove something. And the repair costs........phew.  Even the Japs are falling foul of this marketing tool.

2nd most reliable car in the JD power survey? Dacia! The reason is that Dacia being a Renault company with plants in India and Rumania and elsewhere, they use the well proven old technolgy Renault parts.
OLD TECHNOLOGY WORKS!

Circumstances have delayed the banger rally plans Rich, but I am hoping to be doing one next year with a couple of my brothers.

Good to hear from you - I hope you are both well and happy?

One question though.... why didn't you buy the Escort?  :D
