I took my carlton for a very early MOT I knew it woul fail and wanted to see how much work it was going to need, The mot is due in april so i have loads of time.

It did fail and it failed with the following points

1 NSR brake application uneven
2 OSR brake application uneven
3 Hazard warning switch faulty (got new one to replace)
4 OSf seat belt anchorage prescribed area excessively corroded ( now been welded)
5 NSf seat belt anchorage prescribed area excessively corroded ( now been welded)
6 NSR seat belt anchorage prescribed area excessively corroded ( now been welded)
7 number plate light missing ( bought one and replaced it)
8 offside side repeater insecure (it is now secure)
9 failed emmisions carbon monoxide content excessive limit is 3.500% was 10.097% (now Fine thanks to melinx)
10 NSR subframe mounting prescribed area excessively corroded
11 OSR subframe subframe mounting prescribed area excessively corroded
12 OSF inner wing steering component mounting prescribed area excessively corroded ( now been welded)
13 NSF trailing arm has excessive plat in bush ( replaced both os and ns wishbones)

I have done most of the welding apart from the 2 parts on chassis at rear ( waiting for better weather)

I looked at the back brakes today and realised I need to replace both calipers pads and discs. Does anyone know of a good place to get these parts!!! Looking at the next pic makes me think that the brake has been a bit one sided for a while now.

so all in all not that much left to do for MOT, and once its MOT'd i will start on a lot of body work to get the car looking as good as she could.

hi mate nice geezer
have you added it to the list ?
http://totalcarlton.com/forums/index.php/topic,9750.msg79229.html#msg79229

pads dont lopk that bad in one of the pics ,and i think you can get a caliper refurb kit , pistons, seals etc

might be easier , just to free them off !!

like most gsi , you need to be, know a good welder

The back brakes don't do much when they do work  Tongue
original pads do 100k+
try cleaning the calipers up and refurb if they leak, pretty sure the vectra rear brakes are the same if they are beyond repair

Saturday 21st feb 10:05am. The sun is out and im sure i have everything I need to sort out those back brakes. So I draged out my tools and set to work.

Not a very pretty site especially close up.
I found one problem that i didn't have parts/tools for, the bloody brake pipes are rusted in solid nothing is moving them not even my least hated favorite tool the mole grips. there was only one thing for it which was a hacksaw and running round to find a brake pipe flare tool and some new unions, it isn't as easy as it sounds on a saturday afternoon but i found them both. it is now 14:00 and I have to be at work by 16:00, luckly it all went well and my back brakes now look like this....

I bet they dont stay like that for long.

Sunday 22nd Feb. I replaced antiroll bar links. they are an advisory on MOT but not a failure.
also had 2 new tyres on the front also advisory.

Only things to do for MOT are 2 bits of welding on rear chassis.

I got them from Mill Autoquip in Taunton, They got them direct from delphi.  I didnt change the hoses just had to cut and reflare them, It was a lot easier than i expected.

There is a £30 surcharge on calipers

Be careful with braided hoses as for a GSi (mine is a 24v if thats differant) you need a lotus kit.

Im sure my welding will improve,

i miss read where the next bit of welding is required,

I called back to MOT station and got them to show me, it turns out its the bottom of the wheelwell, quite a large area which is due to previous owner reversing in to telegraph pole.( it might sound familier to some of you)
I will take pics of hole when i start it, at least its easy to get to.

Pray for a nice day tomorrow Smiley

Thanks for that link its very usefull to have my girlfriends car is due an MOT in a few weeks

to be honest I didnt think it had failed on that part of rust/hole but after reading the fail sheet again its under:
NSR vehlcle structure has excessive corrosion which adversely affects braking or steering (dont know why I thought it was OSR chassis lol).

I dont think I will get much done today with all this rain  Embarrassed

I braved the rain and got the last bit of welding done today.

it was the worst bit that needed doing but in the easiest place.

In the beginning

After an hour

just a bit of hammering and welding later

after tidying and hiding the welding (i realised i had run out of gas when i finished)
with seam sealer it looked much better

so was it within 30cm of a suspension mounting point?? simply put ............no

i am an mot tester and i can tell you that was an advise and if it wasnt then it should have failed the very first mot it ever had due to the hole just above the one you plated (albeit not a rust hole its still a hole!!!)

Monday 9th March 2009

I took her for mot today and after being poked and prodded and made to feel ashamed and even slightly abused she passed....

I got an advisory note with it:

front brake slight judder ( I think she was shaking with nerves)
2 chips in windscreen
rear spring mounts have corrosion but not excessive
sills have covers on
front number plate damaged
battery insecure
oil leak
corrosion to doors
corrosion to rear chassis both sides

now i have a year to get her ready for the next one lol...
