When u take ur car 4 mot tester puts reg no into puter an it tells him wot gas test 2 do, not all K reg cars have 2 have cat test. My 93 K dippy comes up non cat [even tho it has 1 fitted or used 2].

You have to take the V5 to the MOT station now - my old K reg Calibra redtop passed with no cat, guy said it just missed needing cats.
I think it was first registered 3/8/93.

BUT some vehicles or rather manufacturers struggled to meet the regs so you can get cars up to an Mreg that are non cat but theoretically they shouldnt be

Aside from getting the MOT tester to check, is there any other way i can find out if it needs cats? Mine needs a new exhaust might de-cat it while im at it?

Mk III chip is for your ECU & is available from the ABS club. They basically compensate for lack of backpressure by increasing fuel (caused when removing cats). They also raise the rev-limiter a touch so you don't drop below the magic 4000rpm when changing gear (in a manual car). If you've just joined ABS then get in touch with Will Reeve as he makes them & he will give you all the details. Have just got one myself but haven't fitted it yet as still need the cats for my forthcoming MOT!
You can sometimes get Blitzchips for 24v GSi's off ebay, usually around £40ish but i don't know if they're any good?

Checksum All the bits and bites add up to a value - that value is written to a specific place in the chip - the ECU self checks itself by adding em all up and comparing the result with the stored value If it equals stored value woo hoo no probs If it doesn't - limp home mode full rich and bugger all performance So if you don't know whee the checksum is in the chip all you can do in the maps is rob peter to pay paul - this means yes you getmore bhp but you often lose everywhere else........ It's basically a hack!!!! A proper chip will have the maps changed as needed and then the checksum value is changed to suit the maps - ergo no hack and no robbing peter to pay paul MKIII in your 24V ECU is exactly that |

Been told today that if your car passes emission test without cats, then it doesnt need em, same as any car doesnt have to have cats, but, if it dont pass test then obviously they will av to go bak on! Spose its worth a punt.
