IF ALL ELSE FAILS - HIT IT!!

« on: July 15, 2008, 07:55:06 PM »

Right, where to start..
Me dad has recently bought a L Reg Cav 1.8ls auto.. 8 valve SFi
When the revs are held at about 1800-2000rpm it starts to over fuel like hell.. had it on an emissions meter and the HC went from about 200ppm to 3000ppm.. ( me gsi runs cleaner than that !)

there was 2 fault codes in the memory
13 & 15 i think.. basically the CTS & Lambda sens.. these have both been changed
Other new bits fitted/done
Oil & filter change
Air filter
Plugs
Dizzy & rotor

I know these are normally fairly simple to solve but this has got be baffeled !
Any ideas would be greatfully appreciated
thanks in advance !

Just checking you've changed the right temperature sensor, there is a small one for the dashboard and a larger one which is the one that feeds the ECU.

The CTS for the ECU will have a 2-pin plug on it, whereas the temp gauge one will be a single spade connector.

If the CTS (or the wiring plug for it) is duff, the ECU will think the engine is stone cold and won't go into closed loop - if it did then the lambda would correct the mixture and your HCs would be ok once the engine is warm.

yes definately changed the CTS Blue top twin connector ! tried 2 in it.. still overfueling..., when its disconnected the EM light comes on so the connector & wiring must be ok..

Any ideas Huh??

Sounds like the same problem I had with my Calibra - turned out that the CTS connectors were mucky, and I knocked it when changing the oil and water last summer.

Cleaned the connector contacts carefully with fine wet 'n' dry paper, then a squirt of switch cleaner.

Job's a goodun! Grin

Hope that helps!

cleaned out the CTS connector & it's still doing the same... could it be the throttle position sensor ?

Would doubt it.

One last check on the CTS...  pull back the rubber sleeve on the plug so you can see the back-end of the pins and put a voltmeter across them with the engine running.  Can't remember off the top of my head what reading you should get... but when it's cold you should get something over 4 volts, and when it's warmed-up you should get a pretty low reading, probably under 1 volt.

This test will confirm that the cabling and sensor are operating correctly - the 5v supply comes from the ECU so the only way you'll get a reading is if the cabling is intact.

I've checked the CTS resistance & supply voltage and both are correct & within the limits, I even checked the old CTS & found that to be working too..

Any Other ideas anyone?

Just to let U all know, the cav is fixed......  would you believe it was the EGR valve !!! so it's been disconnected & the vacuum pipe plugged.. it's running a hell of alot better now !
thanks for the replies

Good to hear it's fixed mate - I wouldn't have known it had an EGR valve though. I didn't know the 8 valve would have had an EGR valve!

Have you blocked it off with a gasket made from a coke can? Apparently that's one way to do it, and leave everything alse connected (taken from VXON spomewhere).

For some reason, I thought only Ecotech XEV and V6 engines had EGR valves, and that they were fitted from 1995.
With yours being an L reg ('94), I guess it's "on the cusp" then?
