What is it about Carltons'?

« Reply #55 on: February 11, 2006, 12:18:03 AM »

Well Blippi - you started this so here we go!

Before the MKII Cortina I owned: -
1) Ford Prefect E493A
2) Ford Prefect 100E - 1172cc Side vale engine with high comp ally head and vacuum controlled overdrive unit. This gave me six forward gears and two reverse. Took it down to Spain and back across the Pyrenees.
3) Ford Prefect 107E The first Kent engined OHV car with 4speed synchronous gearbox (forrunner and prototype to the Ford Anglia 109E) A large number of 107E Prefects were upgraded with the Cortina MKI 1500cc GT engine and gearbox.
4) Vauxhall Viva HB
5) Vauxhall Viva HB SL90
6) Mini Estate Auto (don't ask!)
7) Triumph Toledo (again don't ask) same shape as the famous Triumph Dolomite - now they were fast.

1970 MKII Cortina 1600 GT - Left Hand Drive with full USA Federal Spec, which I later fitted with a 2.0Ltr OHC engine. - Pic taken late seventies

1976 Granada Ghia 3.0Ltr Auto - (my daughter used to ride shot gun for me) - Pic taken 1980 - The Red Cotina MKIII 1600L was mine too.

1980 MKI Golf GTI 1.6Ltr - Went like stink - Pic taken circa 1985/6

MKII Cavalier Hatchback - 1.6L (had two of these at the same time) - This was the wifes car - Pic taken 1993

1986 MKIII Carlton 2.0Ltr GL - (This was the one that got me hooked on Carltons) - Pic taken 1993

1993 MKIII Carlton CDi 2.0Ltr Facelift Model shown brand new on the day of collection on 7th August 1993

Same car - but 12 years later - Pic taken 2005

1989 MG Montego 2.0i (eventually nailed by the tin worm) - Didn't half go though - Pic taken circa 2001

1998 Suzuki Baleno 1.6i 16V with all the electric bells and whistles including AC - Pic taken Jan 2005

2000 Astra Club G 1.6i  - Pretty good all round car with Air Con - fairly basic trim though. - Pic taken Feb 2005

And that's pretty much it - as you know I still have the red Carlton and the Astra G

This was mine for about a week before my wife nicked it off of me.
She's still got it, but doesn't look after it. Good job I do.

Here's one of mine that I had about ten years ago.

Had to get rid of it because of it's insatiable appetite for engines!!  Sad

I'll post up some more when I get five minutes with my scanner!!

Heres some pics of cars Ive owned. Roll Eyes

The first being a Mk II Cavalier SRI 130. This started my fetish for Vauxhall cars Grin

The next purchase was a Vauxhall Cavalier GSI 16v. I went into the local Vx dealers to pick up some parts for the SRI 130. I had no intentions of buying a car? When Wooooooooow!!!!!! Tongue This Cav was sat on the forecourt. Out came the pennies the rest is history Shocked Must admit this car gave me some trouble Huh

I owned the troublesome Cav for two years then purchased a four year old Carlton 3.0 GSI 24v Auto. This was the ultimate machine at the time. I had some fun with the Cossie, pug 205, Rs Turbo , Gte boy racers of the time, you name I raced it and all within 6 weeks, then wrote the bloody thing off!!!!  Huh I was traveling along the A19, the weather was bad snowing, ice etc, the rear end swung out, hit black ice i presume? Me and the car ended up down a bank. I was gutted. The love affair was over for a bit and no pictures!!! just sweet old memories holding onto the steering wheel for dear life as it rolled onto its side. Embarrassed

The fettish was over, i purchased this little pocket rocket the Toyota Corola GTI 16v and did it shift!!! Shocked

I was still craving for that old GSI carlton but could never find one. Cry My next purchase second best to the Carlton and still trying to stick with the fetish was a 3.0 v6 24v Omega Elite, well what a bag of crap this car turned out to be!!!! Huh loads of money spent, not as quick, didn't sound like a 3.0 ltr. I only stuck with it gos i thought the GSI Carlton days were over Shocked Never, Never again will my arse don the seat of a Vauxhall Omega Huh But heres some nice pictures, i did love this car!! Honestly Cheesy

Well thats about it folks my next two cars, know photos taken ( Astra and Citroen Zantia) must admit both cars were good motors. Wink

My Current motors are The Vauxhall Carlton GSI 24v , Ford Focus and my work horse the Ford Transit Tipper.

Got to admit the 130 Cav did it for me. Raw power is the only way to describe it.

I have a Cav MK2 SRi 130 in my garage at this very moment.
It belongs to a mate, but I'm pretty sure he wants rid.
Engine's out, few panels off, but apart from rear lower panels, it's pretty much rot-free.
Slight dents in front of bonnet and N/S A pillar (apparently someone bounced off it!).

Anyone interested?
