IF ALL ELSE FAILS - HIT IT!!

« on: August 15, 2007, 10:51:26 PM »

Right here goes !
the car, f reg GSI 12v manual

The problems......
The car has been running great until yesterday...
Driving in heavy rain, hit some big puddles, still ok.. then came to a roundabout, dipped the clutch, engine died, restarted engine with the key, revved up ok but wont idle..
Got further down the road and pulled over, everything under the bonnet was dry, couldn't find any loose pipes/connections etc.
Started the car again and it was idling but was rough.. tried to rev up the engine, engine died.

I had to bridge 2 connections on the throttle valve switch to get the engine runing so I could get home... parked the car up & left it over night.

This morning it was doing the same, it would idle but not rev up (engine kept dying)
Checked the setting of the TPS this was ok, started the engine again, idled ok but rough and it revved up..  used the car through the day seemed ok.

THEN!!!  it started doing thew same as the 1st time round.. not idling, then it got worse, it was as if someone kept switching the ignition on/off all the time, then it died completely.
Now the little B*****D wont start !!  the engine turns over and attempts to fire up but wont.

The big question is !!!!!  wait for it !!!

Does anyone have any ideas before I start looking at this piece of crap..

If I don't get it fixed it may be going to the knackers yard as a LAST resort !

Many Many thanks for your help in advance !

Mine did that, turned out to be the connector underneath the coil pack. Remove coil, unclip connector and clen both  sets of contacts. (mine were green).

Water in tank connector plug ? where the 2 wire loom joins the pump. bypass the fuel pump relay and check pump is running ok.also fuel pump relay itself may be duff, water may be coincidence  Undecided
any codes /em light ?

If the above post contains spelling mistakes / grammatical errors / poor use of the quote function / a very weak retort, or is generally shyte; it's because I'm feked on a cocktail of drugs, homebrew and carb cleaner.sorry

thanks for the replies people !
well after checking the coil, dizzy etc i found a fault with the throttle valve switch.. I've ordered a new one (39+VAT) should be here on monday as it's en-route from Germany Smiley

So I decided to pull the old one apart.. as you do !  sealed unit, not any more Smiley
found 2 dry solder joints inside!   re soldered them and the other 2 just to make sure, I presume the heat on the throttle body expanded the joints soo much there was no connection.
Anyway, I fitted it back on and hey presto, fired up with a flick of the key and revved up to ! BUT...  it cut out again, wont idle..  so, I fitted 1 of my spare ECU's and all seems to be ok up to now but I've still got to road test it ....

so ... fingers crossed !

I know it was a cheap car and has given me nearly 3 years of trouble free motoring but it really annoys the hell out me when these don't work and are normally bullet proof!

I shall keep you all informed of the progress !
thanks again !
