Posted under random rubbish as it's a carlton forum and it's not a carlton.

But because people have asked about it, I'll start a thread rather than putting it all in the LPG guide, which has nothing to do with it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The very first Bowler Wildcat made - build number 001 on a 51 reg plate.

Originally made with a Landrover 200TDI engine (Ok for a diesel class, but not the best.)

Purchased by my Dad about 2 years ago to run in the british off-road championships, and ultimately to run in the Dakar.

This has run the Dakar 4 times, been rebuilt about 3 times and cost well over £100,000 (spent by the previous owner) over the years... it was left stranded in the desert once, and stripped completely by scavengers!

It was then recovered by the previous owner at great expense, shipped over to the Bowler factory and rebuilt with a brand new BMW 3.0 24v straight 6l TDS engine. (New bellhousing, also at great expense, although now they are being manufactured by landrover as the new Range Rover TD6 engine is the same thing!)

Chipped up to about 235BHP, it has more horses than my carlton!

Here's some pics of when he first bought it:

And then resprayed ready for the Rally Raid UK signwriting.

Then all done with signwriting and ready to do some racing!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The last round of the british off-road championships had a slightly bad turnout. The stages were more like a rally stages than off-raod ones, and my dad rolled it about 3 times at about 60-70mph.

Rollcage around windscreen is bent, and most of the fiber-glass bodywork is trashed....... gonna cost a fair penny to rebuild. He's slightly gutted to say the least!

But the rollcage certainly did it's job... it's the biggest accident he's been in full stop, let alone in motorsport... if it's been a normal car they would've almost certainly be dead by now.

the car itself is still fine, engine still runs very well and drives perfectly, so no domage was done to any suspension apart from it knocked a hose off one of the shocker resevoirs and thats it.

(sorry about the picture sizes, photobucket is being stupid...)

One bent rollcage:

One sorry looking dad:

It still isn't rebuilt yet, 6 months on, but he has a lot to do with the Rally Raid UK team, including preparing for the next Dakar rally, which IIRC starts on the 1st January 2006.

He's in morocco at the moment, testing the new line of desert warriers that the team have designed and built themselves.

Check out www.rallyraid.co.uk for more information about the team and what they do.

Cool, any pics?

The old man used to do LRC events with his old Bowler 88 Special, which incedentally he still owns..

He originally started off with a custom built lightweight 2.25 which he made himselft... I was only little then, but I remember painting the chassis in places for him when I was about 7...

How long ago did you race mate?

Nice pics there Matt! I must confess to knowing sweet naff all about off road racing outside of ralling Smiley

Our local builder used to run in some series tho, he has some crazy v8 beast he used based on a landrover I think.

How come its diesel out of interest? Just rules of the class you are in? Smiley

he's got about 5 sets of the sitting in storage! but thanks for the offer!

He used to rip wings off the old bowler like crazy, but it's not used anymore... and the new bowler doesn't use landrover parts, it's all fiberglass.....

Yes, It's a diesel mainly because of class - there's a diesel class, and there's an under 3000cc class I think.

If your car has a turbo on it they add something like a third onto your engine size, so if it's 3000cc with a turbo, then it's be 4000cc (or something like that) so therefore you've be put in the under 4000cc class... This rule doesn't apply to diesels!  Cool Cool Cool

It's a straight 6 BMW 24v turbo diesel, (same as the X5 and 530d, etc.) which is chipped, and is at the moment running about 235BHP and stupid amounts of torque, but when it's rebuilt, it'll be chipped again to make it about 260BHP...

Not bad for a diesel! there's hardly any turbo lag either. The only problem is, when you ship a diesel, it just puts more fuel into the maps, so it coughs out huuuuuuuuuuge amounts of black smoke out the exhaust! (the chip is changed back to standard for MOTs and emissions tests! Wink Wink Wink)

I see, makes sense I spose!

And yes, Turbo Diesel Tuning is a very interesting area.... the Yanks make some seriously fast beasts out of their Diesel pickups.... with the aforementioned smoke!

Well I had to walk up to the hospital with a cut above the eye,
I was wearing my school shirt and by the time I had done the mile walk I walked into casualty with a bright red shirt and face.

The dumb cow behind the counter looked at me and said

"can I help???"

I said

"yeah I've broke my toe"

The dopey cow..........

I was a pasenger on my mates bike one week end build up to the tt on the isle of man a few year ago and after a good scuirt around the lanes we stopped for a pint and a fag..

I said to him that he had got a bit to close to one or too of the dry stome walls ........

He said "there is only two walls you gotta look out for on the island"

I asked "whitch ones" ordering two pints.......

He said with a seriously look, raising his pint.

"The one on the left and the one on the right" ..............................................
