I stuck my headlining back with glue a while ago and all seemed fine, but the whole lot has seperated at the rear now.

Due to the high probability of it going horribly wrong when I attempt to glue it again, Im considering either ripping the fabric off completely and rub off the foam crap from underneath or taking the headlining out and re-covering it properly.

What would I find underneath the foam? as in what colour is it? and would it look ok as a headlining?

Is it possible to remove the headlining without taking out the front/rear screen?

Roof lining is made of a recycled paper-mache, this is moulded Then (IIRC), there's a thin layer of foam, and then the flocky stuff.

And it's all glued together.

Trying to remove the flocky stuff - well, I'd rather remove a rear axle without the aid of a jack!

As far as removing the 'lining, I think it might be an idea to remove the front seats and steering wheel first.

You can remove the head lining on a saloon without removing the screens as I've done this on both of mine and replaced with decent ones. To do this follow this list

1. Remove the sun visors and all their clips
2. Remove the curtisey light by un clipping it.
3. Remove the sunroof controls (2 screws behind the light and then it unclips) and unplug the wires.
4. Remove the trim around the sunroof opening.
5. Remove the A pillar covers
6. Remove rear grab handles
7. Loosen the top sections of the B pillar cover (clipped on)
8. Loosen the C pillar trims and remove the plastic strip joining the 2 across the rear of the car.

Head lining should now just drop down but maybe stuck lightly along the front.

You'll probably have to fold the seats right down to get it out and the new one in but be carfull putting the new one in because if you crease them the creases tend to stay.

Well I de-skinned the headlining today. Took some of the foam off and it looks just like fibreglass underneath (obviously not though), I took the rest of the foam off and it doesnt look to bad so Im leaving it as it is.

I'm just about to attempt mine. How strong are the clips on the crossways piece above the rear screen, as it seems to be resistant to gentle levering, and I don't want to break the clips!

The plastics around the rear screen are very brittle - age perhaps - and do break quite easily. I snapped the first one I did without doing much!

I did mine very, very carefully, but you do have to "go for it" sometimes.

IIRC, the centre bit comes out first, and you have to sort of pull it out from the middle first, then the ends come out relatively easily. The C pillar trims need prising off with either a trim clip removing tool, or a sturdy old fork. Wink

Just come in from removing headlining fron scrapper CDi, and fitting it to my new GSi, I'm surprised how well it went, most time consuming thing was swapping the sunroof panels, which is a bit of a game. I found that the headling bends in the middle round the sunroof hole, which makes getting it in and out the car a lot easier. Only broke one clip as well, so well pleased. One thing I did do, was to run the car for 20 mins with the heater full on, which made all of the plastic trims, etc, a bit more pliable.
