Ok a few weekends ago I happened on a 1983 (A reg) v.carlton 2.0 litre beauty (or in my eyes anyways). Some old boy who had her from new died earlier this month and left his pride & joy behind. I bought the car in a moment of madness. I am running her at the moment but not being a true enthusiast I think she is wasted on me. The car is in good nick for the age. MOT'd and taxed until the end of July and been run over recent years perhaps 3 or 4 days a week and kept in a garage otherwise. The owner has obviously spent tons of time under the bonnet, servicing the car himself etc etc. I found out about the car through the neighbour of the carlton's owner - who was a mechanic and worked many an hour on the car too. He tells me he re-built the engine approx 7 years ago and did a lot of welding on known weak spots etc. What I want to know is would anybody be likely to be interested in such a car? I have no idea what is desirable and what not so I'm doing a bit of searching to find the next possible owner.....unfortunately I can't afford to keep her for too long. She's a bit thirsty! I can post pictures at a later date.

She is a Carlton 2000 GL - saloon, manual.
Quality burnt orange colour ...although they call it brown in the original paperwork. With that lovely tobacco beige coloured velour interior!
She's got 110,500 miles on the clock approx.
I brought the car down to Birmingham from Manchester...and really enjoyed driving her on the motorway I must say! A weekend car I reckon....running across Brum city centre every day is not going to do her any good!
What else have I forgotten?

i've added a link on my profile to some pics a mate kindly took of the carlton i have just got. Let me know what you chaps think.....of the car that is.
please xcuse the unnecessary shots, i'm afraid there are a few not very serious car enthusiast ones. but i don't have a camera at the moment to do the job professionally.
i will get some proper decent pics at the weekend if poss.

do you know what.....i'd love to keep her and most folk i know will give me grief if i let her go.
but if i was paid a bit more than peanuts and didn't have to drive 30 miles to work and back, there would be no 2nd thought!
i just need to make sure she is going to go somewhere other than the scrapyard.
i have booked a photographer for the weekend!

How much does a service cost and what is involved ?
a service is usually 2 hours lobour plus bits ie air, oil, fuel and pollen filters, oil, check brake pads and shoes grease hinges and catches ,fill washer bottle with a detergent check wipers (replace as needed) check all lights tyres etc this will normally cost a total of around £200-£250 including vat

with regards selling it, the car is what people see as"a future classic" have you got it on a classic car insurance?if not why not? that engine is bullet proof, and if anything goes wrong parts are cheap if not free, also look at it this way, when did you last see anther mk2 carlton? i dought you would lose a penny if you sold it, more likly gain a few! keep hold of it

I did end up getting the best insurance price with Lancaster Insurance which is a classic insurance co. Although another insurer told me at the time that classic insurance discounts only apply if it is your 2nd car you are insuring! But yes it is a pretty decent price considering the size of the tank!
I would definitely say that she needs a good once over and a tune. She starts straight off but then conks out when I drive her off and come to a stop. So I guess that's a tuning issue? The neighbour of the guy I bought it off in Stockport (who has done quite a bit of work on it) has said that I can go back and he'll give her a good look over.
I live in Erdington in Birmingham and work in Halesowen.
