not worked for a while so thought i'd investigate...   checked the fuse and found that the fuse box around were the fuse sits was melted  Shocked   obviosly this is the problem .. how do i fix it without changing the whole fusebox? and why has this happend?? and why didn't the fuse pop??

Im afriad this is a problem with heated windows. Around the fuse can get warm and cause the plastic to melt if they are used regulary. The only fix is to buy a couple of connectors which the spades of the fuse can connect to and maybe find an empty slot in the box and a basic rewire and that should sort your problem. You should also hear a click from a relay. If not, then possibly it is that what is naff or the heater element itself. Only way to test these is with a multimeter.  Grin

the switch has a timer in it switchs off after 15 minutes,
some times they stick
and melt ya fuse box

Mine was the same although the trip out timer was good. I found two solutions:

1. Replace the fuse with a thermostatic one. this will fit in the standard fuse slot (just) and will break the circuit if it gets too hot, saving your fuse box from further melt down.
 
2. Replace the relay (located just behind the fuse box) with one from a later model. They have an extra pin that will allow you to switch off the heated window at the switch as soon as it is clear rather than having to wait for the timer to switch.

Did both on my '88 GLi and sorted the prob.  Hope this helps   Huh
