I think it is coming to the time for substituting the ECU ! the spark intensity is directly related to the speed that the coil primary current is switched off. If the semiconductors in the ECU that control this have become leaky or aren't switching fast enough it will result in a weak spark. It will be a bit ominous for everyone if this has occurred due to age though because I get the impression that the ECU is a pretty reliable piece of gear, unlike most of the other electronic systems on these cars.

remember the ecu is well protected behind a kick pannel so unless you have a leak and its got wet it might NOT be that .or might be ...who knows but the ecu and all other engine management components are connected together with looms , some engine flexing/movement over time could case harden(weaken ) these looms and cause an open circuit. only way to know is to meter the looms out and that could take a while hope this helps

One thing I thought of....the ECU gets its earth for the coil switching output stage from a specific point (it's not a general earth). Its one of the three brown wires that are earthed at the rear of the intake manifold bridge. Check these, if they're high resistance you'll get a low coil voltage. Also these three connections ultimately get they're earth from the engine main earthing braid. Check this.

I think Mr, GMC is thinking of the dreaded "borewash" syndrome.

This is a really long shot, but that sounds like the fuel vapourising, same as the old Rover V8's used to do. Are any of your fuel supply lines close to the exhaust manifold? Try re-routing the fuel lines. Like I said, it's a long shot.

My brother's SD1 used to do that, especially when it was getting low on petrol. Had to pour petrol down the Strombergs!
