hello, how do you remove the steering idler on a carly 2.0i??

what precautions are there if any ??

No precautions as such.

Are you removing the arm or the entire assembly?

Either way, extracting the tapered pin at the ball joint end is a PITA!! You could either use a suitable ball joint breaker, (not a snakes tongue!!), or do what I did and lower the arm on to an axle stand, (no pressure mind, just enough to stop any movement!), then with the nut still in place, but loosened and using a few extension bars plugged together and a suitably sized mallet beat the sh*t out of it till it separates.

Be warned though! The method I used did have a slightly detrimental effect on the threads of the ball joint!!
