Evening all, just joined the site.
Meet a few people when i went to the Autobarn stormers meet in Middelton.
Anyway, been looking at getting a Carlton gsi 3000 24v ever since Matt took me out in his.
Didnt think id be able to insure one at first, but got a reasonable quote for one and i have till February to find a tidy one.
Ive just sold my white nova sri and currently flying about in an izusu engined turbo diesel cavalier.  Huh

So boys and girls a few quick questions. What sort of price am i looking at for a reasonable carlton gsi?
Much difference between the 12v and 24v?
And common faults?
And bodywork wise, where are the main areas?

Prices vary wildly but £1000 - 1500 should get you a good one.

Difference between 12v and 24v  -  slightly different bumpers and indicators, interior a bit nicer in the 24v and about 30bhp

Common faults  - 12v are bulletproof milemunchers and 24v are a bit weaker mainly due to the timing chains and guides (£1000 to sort out if you do it before the engine gets lunched). A few minor niggles on both.

Bodywork - rear arches, sills and chassis rails are the main suspects.

Welcome aboard!  Grin

Yes, you can judge the whole car on the state of the rear arches inside the 'door shuts' Wink

You can replace or make up/repair this section & it doesn't show when the rear doors are closed. If the mot tester sees jagged edges of rusty metal when he opens the rear doors, then it WILL fail on this area. The thing is, once this area has rotted badly, you can be sure that there WILL be rot in other areas such as the sills behind those dreaded plastic skirts & the front chassis rails, plus, even the rear chassis rails forward of the springs Undecided Although these areas can be (& may have been already) repaired Smiley

There's been a white one in the 'for sale' section on here recently. The rear arches have gone (quite badly on one side), but IMO at a third of the asking price it could be worth a shot Undecided Wink..........worth making an offer, maybe Undecided

Cheers guys, i ashume u mean the white one on ebay with the fox rims?
Saw that one and it looked quite tidy until the back doors are open and u can see how rotten it is.
Ive got a while to look for one anyway, dont plan on insuring and putting it on the road till February.
What they like with regards to backend out action, ive never owned a rwd car before let alone drove one properly?

hi there, as for sideways in a gsi, mine is a manual and its fairly controllable. I used to have a 2.9 Gr***da that used to swop ends like a football match at half time when given a bit of abuse. I think the LSD in the GSI helps - just don't get caught by the fuzz!
