Mr Tetly Smooth and I attempted to change the front bumper on his newest aquisition and encountered numerious problems along the way. Personally I am not happy with the fit to either the wheel arches and across the front of the radiator grille. phot 1 herephoto 2 hereproblem 1. The bumper sticks past the wing line by approx 10mm, If the bumper was lined up with the wheel arch the main bumper fixing was way out of line to the chassis rail. As it was we had to use a 6mm bolt instead of the 8mm bolt to even get a fixing. problem 2. The bumper across the front of the air intake grill is out of line and there is a distinct angle to the fit. And again we were unable to gain any leeway regarding main fix points. Look at photo 2 and look closely just above the chrome bumper strip. Can anybody shed some light onto these problems we are encountering?

It could be that either the car or the replacement bumper have recieved some damage in the past.
If the old bumper fits ok the why not remove the metal part and fit it to the new bumper, then re fit.

Don't know if it's the angle the photo's are taken but r/h headlight dosn't look to be sitting right to me

no damage to either metal parts or bumper to our knowledge. I should add that both wings have been replaced recently, but not sure if they are pattern parts. Maybe a little short in the wing. There again it may be a pattern part bumper thats not right. We are really frustrated after checking everything twice.

No serious impacts to my knowledge, the bumper was damaged when I got the car, passenger side quarter. The indicator on that side keeps popping out as well.

nearside indicator sorted, ofside indicator glue setting at the moment.

I think it's pretty obvious that one or other of them have had a little 'shunt' in the distant past.
Is it my eyes, or does that look like the inner wing to front chassis on the second photo, needs a bit of welding for its forthcoming test?

No, welding not required HMK, the wheelarch protector was in place when the photo was taken, it's either a black mark on the protector or the photo. One thing I thought of John (DoG), as I was driving around last night, was that the manufacturers plate has been sprayed over, so the car's obviously had some work to the front end, probably ages ago. I was wondering if I could fit spacers in between the bumper iron and the reinforcing iron, without the need to take the b****y thing off again, sort of u shaped thingys. Loosen the four nuts off, slide the spacers in between the bumper brackets and the reinforcing iron, tighten up again, should bring the bumper forward. Finally chaps, please excuse the state of my front garden. The spares pile has grown somewhat recently and the wind has been blowing all sorts of stuff around.

Why? are they diifferent from model to model or in length? no signs of damage to existing metalwork. Should add that mr smooths car does not have the slot as shown her just a drilled 8mm threaded hole. slot

Thats why I suggested using the original Ironwork - If the original bumper fit ok on it, then so should the replacement.

we did use existing brackets, but not the metalwork that runs the length of the bumper. This problem is so infuriating as we have inspected everything and just cant see where the lineing up problem springs from. I must admit to being a bit picky on doing the job perfectly and it must be correct.

You had me a bit worried there HMK, so I took another look under the wheelarch today and I'm pleased to report that everything is as it should be with no corrosion at all. I really don't know what that is in photo 2, must be a blemish on the pic. Must admit though, it does look like a rust hole, but happy to say that it's not.
