Wrong info on the cam belt, I think Undecided

Vauxhall revised this 80k mile thing quite a few years ago due to many failures well before 80k.

Should be no more than 40k Huh

If it really is the original belt at 74k, then it's on VERY borrowed time indeed Shocked

My guess is that it's been done at 40k & will be due again at 80k Wink

Best check the service history...........if it's got any Wink

Gary it CAME true !! Now the heater is playing up..It comes on when you start the car and then goes off when you are driving.I just pulled in for some petrol and it came on again..Re-started it eventually...Heater working then went off again...So more jobs for garage tomorrow Sad

Mystic GMC

Well thats it now, you've had three things go wrong and hopefully its only a loose connection to the heater motor unit? could also be a resistor? Have all fan speeds stopped working or just the first and second speeds? you have a 4 speed fan on the astra as i remember and 3 speeds on the earlier cars. 99.9% resistor failure.

I was just told when I bought it that it would need a new one at the 80k ..Apparently a mechanic owned it at one time? What does a cam belt do?

Its what a cambelt doesn't do thats the problem!!!! Its like a large rubber band ( much stronger ) that runs around a number of pulleys within a plastic case, so not visible in most cases. This belt keeps the engine running  so all components go up and down in perfect synchronization and work together in perfect harmony, thus a sweet running engine. Motor manufactures set time / mileage to change these belts gos when they snap all hell brakes loose the engine goes out of sync the cylinders make love to the Valves  Cry ( in most cases ) and the engine grinds to a halt which = expensive repair bill or new engine. The belts themselves are relatively cheap in comparison to a new engine or repair bills.

I had an R reg 1998 Astra 1.4 8v. The belt and labour at a local VX dealer was £60.00 Wink
