Solving Your Plumbing Problems In The Bristol Area

« on: November 28, 2006, 12:47:36 PM »

CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN THIS?Huh??

For the last 12 months my Mk2 2200CDi pinked badly especially going up hill. For about the same length of time, my battery had been weak (poss. a cell down) but would always be enough to start (although the starter turned slowly) the car and run all elec. systems.
Finally, the battery died completely and was re-newed. RESULT - no more pinking!
Why did a slightly weak battery cause pinking?   Answers on a postcard please!

I would guess that the alternator output wasnt quite enough to cope with a duff battery and run all the car's systems.

This would result in a slight voltage drop in the most demanding circuits, ie ignition circuit.

This in turn would result in a weak spark, causing inefficient combustion which you can hear as pinking.

Does that make any sense, or am I rambling?
