I like it!!!!
My Brother in Law drives a bus...............
But he keeps trying for me to do so. I keep telling him it's not a good plan.
The prahse 'SHUT THE FU~K UP' does not go down to well with passengers.
Nore if I decide to go to the breakers yard either while on a shift...............
Think I will stick to my every day job.

Ok since were on the 'bus theme' i admit my last few years have been spent driving the afore mentioned dreaded nut houses on wheels!! a Dennis Dominator i do beleive!!! Below is what i think is the best bus ever for service work! A good old National! And the last thing i drove daily before i had,had enough of the coach life!! Who ever said "its a great life on the buses" should be made to do it for a week!!! see how great it is!! On that theme...i heard a couple of weeks ago,on the radio, that the actor Reg Varney who played Stan Butler in the comedy 'On the buses' has just turned 90!!........there you go some more totally useless info!!!

Leyland National...most of them were Gardiner powered!! Great buses....there big downfall was the steering lock...! turned like a hackney cab on left lock and turn like a huge oil tanker on right lock!!...i drove them day in day out for a couple of years before they were replaced with the dreaded 'low floor' Plaxtons... Another favourite.....the good old Leopard! I had one of these doing 85mph down the motorway running light back to the depot one night......it was scary!!

I started off on the Gardner 6LXB powered Leyland Titan's - they handled really well, much better than the Volvo's they use now which are based on the Leyland Olympian, which also handled like crap!

I still love how the cop thought, 'hey, no way that ain't coming down!'
And tied a thin piece of plastic to a wiper arm on a couple of feet away...............
Now they would have a good square mile sealed off!
My my, how times change..........

I've never driven a Leopard, one of the few modern buses i have never driven. But i have to disagree with the Leyland National comment. Most of them have Leyland engines, the Gardner engine was only offered on the later National II's (as in your picture). Although i think a lot of the gardner ones may have been scottish as they like that engine up there!! The National Mk1 (looks like the pic above but without the radiator grille) was only ever offered with the fixed head Leyland 510 engine (8.2 litre i think?) which was a very clattery & smokey unit. Later in life, operators used to replace this engine with mostly Volvo THD100 engines, but quite a few had DAF DKL/DKTL units & a few also had Gardners in. The National Mk2 was a much better bus in my opinion, fitte4d as standard with the Leyland 680 (same engine as the Leopard), which later was renamed the Leyland L11 with the turbocharged TL11 or the Gardner 6HLXB or 6HLXCT being optional. I passed my automatic test on a Volve re-engined Mk1 National so have a real soft spot for them, although its been a couple of years since i drove one. I then used to drive a lot of Mk2 Nationals in service with RoadCar, ideal machines for service work & a good one would do 65. Nowadays i drive mainly Volvo Olympians or MCW Metrobuses. Although we do have some odd buses like the Leyland Lion that i got pics of somewhere else on this forum. Drove quite a few Titans in a previous job, but my fabourite decker would have to be the Leyland Atlantean (like the one i crashed in the picture!). As you can tell i have my anorak fully on at the moment!!

Aye was the mk11's i was talking about..... we only had one mk1 which was only used for schools...and was very smokey! Im not that clued up on buses anyway...just know some things about them....as in tools of the job type thing Mcgills of Barrhead were one of the few operators than ran nothing but Nationals 1's & 2's and a couple of DAB bendy's!! they were away before i started though...and i worked with them not long before Clydeside took over, then a few months later the dreaded Arriva came on the scene and ruined it all!!!!!
