Fix your air-con at home

Popped into halfords the other week and there now selling the R134 Gas in aerosol for about £44, most places charge about that to re-gass it, but the can at halfords holds plenty of gas, enough to re-gass it at home a few times. If like me your air-con runs R134 gas and has packed up due to low pressure heres how to re-gas it.

1. Turn the ignition on and the air-con on. Even though the light wont show up on the dash you should be able to here a tiny motor running under the driverside bulkhead.

2. Bridge the low-pressure switch. There is a plug which is located on the pipes running along the driverside chassis rail. Unplug it and bridge it using a paperclip. You should hear a clunk.

3. Check the air-con switch light has come on and start the engine. Its worth checking the pump before you re-gass, listen to it for rumble, and strange noise etc.

4. Connect the aerosol to the condensor at the top passenger side of the car and begin regassing. You will have to hold the connector on the valve as you re-gass. Once the gauge shows the correct prerssure disconnect it, reconnect the low presssure swiitch and the air-con should work.

This is what id did to mine today, only to find the gass was pissing out f the ari-con rad, at least i saved myself the inconvience of taking it to specialist and i can fix it and re-gass it myself now.

I got the gas, but all that seams to happen is the refilling tube to fill and not go into the condenser.

Hi Just a thought, to save yoursel some cash some carltons came with copper air con rad these normally dont leak and just need regassing, so before u spend 44£ worth checking its copper. easy to spot scrape paint away and it should be a well erre ... coppery colour lol

Had the same problem on mine. You have to press/hold the the valve onto the condensor and pump at the same time. It's a bit tricky having to do bth at the same time. Make sure the engines running though otherwise you will just fill condensor.

Just bought a new condenser for mine iy was 140 quid, got it from local vx dealers factors side[if that makes sense]

Bugger i think my air con rad is leaking. hissing noise and ligh goes out on dash.

look like im not gonaa have air con.

Exactly the same as mine. I have a brand new rad in the garage. Il probably fit it one day, maybe when the winter arrives!
