hey all...new to forum, just bought a 1991 gsi3000 24v. the car will be here on tuesday (bought it from scotland). just some advice please. i am intending on using it for road use but also track days and drifting and as this is high rpm stuff i was wondering if it would be worth changing the timing chain and guides. I have heard they can give trouble and after pricing them at my local dealer i found the stuff quite expensive. is there any independants in england that can supply the chains and guides cheaper. also i have a vortech centrifical supercharger from a previous project, has anybody tries forced induction on the 3.0l 24v engine before..do u think i may need to replace the pistons or will a thicker headgasket do as i only plan on running 5-7 psi of boost with a intercooler. thanks for any replies. cheers, hope england do the business today againt portugal  ...ahhhh the glory of northern irelands win is still fresh in my memory.

Hello John, and welcome to TC.
I've seen alot of posts about the 24v having trouble with the timing chains, but to be honest, I think they're as good as other chaindriven engines - in general. Like owt else, if it's not looked after, it won't last very well!
Yes, there's improvements to be had - but you can improve owt if you think about it long enough.
I've not had anything to do with forced induction engines myself, but there are a few clever gadgies on here that might be able to answer your quieries.
I hope England can win today too - we need to raise our game quite a bit though.............and as for NI and that "glorious win" - it was only 1 - 0, but the sickener for me was that David Healy scored (I'm a massive LUFC fan).

Hi mate and welcome! There are some on here who can point you in the direction of uprated chains, guides etc - its only a matter of time  I've not seen a forced-induction Carly but if you get it running well I'd like to see the result. Didnt see the NI win but gotta be pleased that Argentina are out - I'd rather we were up against Germany any day. Another England/Germany final? OOOH YEEEAH!

Hi John- yes the chains could be a problem over 100,000 miles. More likely its the guides that break down 1st with bits of plastic comming off and jamming in the chains which in turn jumps them over the sprocket and a large bang is the result.
There are stronger uprated chains available but you have to consider all the other bits to replace at the same time. Rough cost in total £550.00 so its not cheap. Then you have to do it yourself, roughly a full weekend job. Some of the gaskets/seals are no longer available but can be obtained.

well picked up the car tonite and boy does she need some work...needs as follows..DEEP BREATH
1. 2 front wings 9 rusted through at edges) 2. pass side quarter panel (rusted through) also boot floor rotted were joined to quarter(ie GONE!!!) 3. drives side arch and part of inner quarter 4. both sills complete 5. respray 6. brakes and alignment sorted 7.tune up 8. engine light on...running rough and wont take the rev too well, when u gun it it make a real loud knock as if the timing is wayyyy of. any ideas gents.
any way what do u expect for 300 quid. its not a bad base to start from and will make a good car. cheers iain for ur help and i will be puting a post up to display the progress of the restoration.

I must admit John i never thought it was as bad as that  As i said to you on the phone,that i never had the time to look at in depth,and i was going to break it originally.....i kinda feel guilty now...hope you dont feel that i mis-led you or anything!? Bloo*y thing cost me £350 too!!

dont feel guilty iain  , it's 15 years old after all. anyway it will keep me out of trouble for the summer sorting her out. i have decided to totally strip out the rear end and front crossmembers as well to have them sand blasted and galvanized. will make a change from powder coating and should stand up better to salt etc.
