I am well aware that HID kits are being sold (discussion on MIG from a couple of months ago, and I believe on here as well).
But I currently don't have the 150 £ (approx), so I'd prefer getting the parts from a scrappy.
I've got some basic electrical knowledge, I can wire a relay, all I want to know is, what parts exactly do I need, and from what car?
A leccy drawing would be very helpful... Or any remarks one might have are always appreciated...

I tried various bulbs in mine, but thought the lights were still crap!
Gotta say, the HID conversion is fantastic, although main beam is a waste of time even with 100W halogen jobbies fitted, so I have a plan to try some "projector" type lights - perhaps from a Meega - incorporated into the Carlton housings (another job for a rainy day - oh, hang on, it's pi55ing down !). Won't be easy, but no guts, no glory!

I am not familiar with this terminology, could someone clarify this for me? Lights are stand 1 and 2 (small/bigger 'normal' lights'), then you have the lights you switch on with the indicator stalk (really large lights) . Which are which exactly? I guess, in this order, it is: 80-100 and again 100 W, this would be correct? and If I change the bulbs for 80 and 100 W bulbs, do I need to upgrade the cables or wire a relay to switch 'em on, or can the standard cables do this just fine? And Pedro, for the moment I'll be happy with anything better than standard, HID might come later (maybe even before winter...) |

Lights are stand 1 and 2 (small/bigger 'normal' lights'), then you have the lights you switch on with the indicator stalk (really large lights) . Right std is 55W Dip and 60W Main - This bulb is the double fillement bulb in the outside of the headlight If you have pencil beams (Auxilary bulbs in the inside edge ofthe headlights closest to the grill on a carlton) they will be 55W Which are which exactly? I guess, in this order, it is: 80-100 and again 100 W, this would be correct? The combined bulb 55/60W can be upgraded to 80/100W The pencil beam bulb can be upgraded to 100W This gives a total wattage on dip of 160W and a total wattageon Main beam of 400W (AKA Daylight) and If I change the bulbs for 80 and 100 W bulbs, do I need to upgrade the cables or wire a relay to switch 'em on, or can the standard cables do this just fine? Nope all the std wiring and relays can cope with this change however if you want the full benefit of this change and not just a quick fix for an improvement I would however remove the headlights - take off the glass and clean the inside of the glass/reflectors to get rid of the inevitable fogging that comes with age. Cosmetic cotton wool and a tiny drop of fairy liquid in warm water and on the silver reflectors do not rub hard - gentle wipes is all it needs and dry with fresh cotton wool |

The Hid Unit on a mega only works on Dip Beam ,Single filament.
Therefore looking at the photo, you would lose your normal Main Beam and have to rely on just your Extra Driving Lights fitted to CDX and Diplomat Models unless i am mistaken.
Even Uprating the bulbs this would be a step backwards as these are intended as Spotlights and do not spread such a Wide Beam as your Main Beam Lights do.
The 80/100w Replacements for Main/ Dip Bulb and 100w in the Auxiliary Driving Lights is the more Practical route to go.

Kinda agrre there,Bernard - when I hit the main beam (2x100W), it makes no real difference with the HID on. I've had to wire the HID to be on even with the main beam.
Might try out some 150watt bulbs at some point.

Yes you are quite right m8,on my 3.0Litre Elite the Hid Dip beams stay on even when you change over to Main Beam to give you the Full benefit , much the same as Four Headlight set up on BMW's and later Capri's
