Just ripped out the nice Vibe SE speakers (Kevlar cones) and matching tweeters from the Vectra and installed them in the back of The Louts.
Shoved a Rammstein CD in, and turned the headunit up to about 15 (aboult half volume) - sounding loads better than the standard fayre from VX.
Right - volume up to 22 then - head unit goes off! I mean it switches off, and kinda switches back on till noise then off again!! All by itself, and it's not done that before!!
All worked well in the Vectra - soooooo, I'm guessing it's a polaric problem. I don't know which of the standard rear speaker cables are + or -.
Any ideas?

pete it could be that the impedance is wrong on the new speakers i had the same problem in my meega my kenwood just didnt like going over a certain volume murph has the same stereo and his did the same i think its all down to the heat generated by the amps in the stereo unit there is probably a thermal cut out or some such

They worked fine in the Vectra with the same head unit.
Will try and find my HJB and check out the wiring diagrams tomorrow.

The theory CM and I came up with was that the area behind the Carlton dash is just too warm to allow a powerful stereo to cool effectively, causing it to auto shut-down when you shunt any real power through it. Our solution was to install an amp and box in the boot which took some strain off the head unit - it just didnt need to be turned up too far to get a good sound.
We also thought about mounting a PC cooling fan in the top of the oddments tray under the stereo but never got round to trying it.

Same head unit in both cars - they both worked very well. I still think it's a polaric problem!
Ta for answering though!

I had a problem with my home sound system where if I turned the volume up to a certain level, it would go 'mute' intermittently.
After pulling the thing apart for two hours looking for bad solder joints, I inadvertantly found that one of the speaker wire strands was connecting with the other contact basically shorting it out. rectified the wiring and it worked perfectly since.
Might be a similar thing with yours Pete, perhaps the wires shorting out in the door jamb intermittently.

The fronts were changed for JBL GTO speakers ages ago and work fine. Only had this blip since fitting the Vibes in the rear shelf. They seem fine now, though! Whippet - what "decent" music would you suggest?

It's not the actual polarity..................it's that ALL the speakers MUST be connected with THE SAME polarity (so that they all 'push' & 'pull' at the same time). Sounds like it was a fluke fault..........bad connection somewhere

I had this problem not long ago....
I bet you didn't have the engine on at the time?
If you didn't then it would be the fact that the stereo needs a certain voltage to work, and the more you turn it up, the more voltage/current it uses up, the more it drains the battery.
Only mine did it when the engine was on because the alternator was fooked.

Yes, good point.............the terminal voltage of the battery would only have to be slightly down to cause all sorts of strange things like that on those big amp output stages.

You're right Matt, I didn't have the engine on! It's not a massive system, just 25W per channel, I think! BOOM BOOM, it ain't!

It won't matter mate - a stereo takes up a fair amount of currentvoltage when you crank it up, as I've recently found out and it will cut out momentarily if it doesn't have the current/voltage it needs Yay - I got something right for once!

At 1st i wired my PS2 straight to the battery , used to cut /trip off after a few mins then tapped in to the 12v+ from the head unit & work fine now wondered if it was getting 12v+ to 14 v or to many amps from battery ?

Think I've sussed it - bass overload - if that's possible, bearing in mind it's just a crappy JVC head unit and the aforementioned speakers.
It's been doing it again - sorry Matt, but even when driving, this time!
Turn down the bass, and all is (relatively) well.
Sod this, Going for a new head unit when funds allow.........

It's the same problem Pete - if you turn up the bass you need more current - it's bass that kills more than treble or mid. Fit a bloomin amp and a decent stereo and have done with it
