2 Carltons, 5 litres, 10 cylinders and one turbo

« on: January 19, 2006, 05:27:46 PM »

Hello chaps, Managed to haul myself out of bed today and managed to get a fair bit of work done on the Carlton.

Today I did:
More brake pipe work, one 4-pot caliper now plumbed in using new lines, unions and Rover rear flexi's! (perfect fit)
O/S engine dampener connected to engine block using much clever metal bracketary and loads of welding
Repositioning of idle control valve (for better access when it starts playing up)
Car loom wiring for engine - Main +ive feed for starter/alternator, alternator telltale wire, oil press and low wires (60% complete)

Pics:
Pipework on O/S caliper

Overall bay shot (was getting dark when taken)

Enjoy.

Update:
Totally fitted the early 2.0 8v radiator top mounts/sidemembers and all painted, also moved the bottom rad mounts to suit. (I ditched the 3.0 radiator and position because it was too wide and I couldn't get the FMIC pipework past. The narrower radiator is a perfect size and is also about 2-3 inches further backward... giving the added advantage of little to no headsoak into the FMIC!!)

Some of you know that as a donar I used an F-reg 2.0 8v manual estate for the parts I needed, these included the gearbox and a few other parts. I knew that the 2.0 8v R25 manual box used the same internals as my old 3.0 12v box, so I knew it would be strong, however I made a mistake in assuming the gearbox casing was the same length and I threw the propshaft away!! Well the 2.0 8v R25 has a shorter casing and a longer forward section of propshaft. Not too much of a problem, so off I went to the breakers and found a manual 2.0 8v, it was a late K-plate one. Apon getting the prop home I found the end plate (triangle shaped bracket that bolts to the dampener) was smaller whereas mine had the larger type found on 3.0s. Later delving into EPC found that my propshaft was rare!! Found only on very early 2.0 8v Manual Estates!!!

Well a few days ago I found a replacement! It arrived this morning and I will fit it today, very happy.

While the prop is off I will be plumbing in the rest of the copper brake line into the cabin for the bia valve.

Also I think it might be time to break out the Waxoil  Grin

Pictures to follow

I would post up all the pics I took today, but I wrote up a nice story with about 8 pictures showing all the work. Went to post it and the server fucked up again and I lost it all.

CBA to do it all again, might do it tomorrow.

can be arsed now:
Car is really coming along, found a replacement propshaft and fitted that today, along with the rest of the brake lines.

Bay shots:

Brake lines coming into the cabin, they pop up where the armrest cubby hole is, once the bias valve arrives it will be inside the armrest for stealth  Cheesy

Brakes all plumbed in now, sure they are big enough?

Enjoy.

I have really picked up the pace now as I can divert all attention to it, before I couldn't because of all the others car I had to do.

This is what is left to do
List =
Coolant pipework 90%
FMIC pipework and fitment 0%
Exhaust 0%
Engine loom 0%
Car loom 70%
Engine pay painting 90%
Bodykit fitting 80%
Final engine mods (dizzy fitment) 0%
Interior modifications 0%

Not mentioning of course the respray which has to occur at some point before Billing.

you will NEVER see 170bhp.

As long you use a non-cat exhaust that is half decent you would see about 160bhp, 165bhp tops

I know about the XE's and due to their agressive standard fuel map, cams and so on there isn't much more to be had without big money spent. The standard AMM (air Mass Meter) will top out about 170bhp. If you want big power think about Throttle bodies, depending on ur budget up to 300bhp is possible from the XE.

Did you check the cam belt wasn't loose/misaligned before u fired it up?

Its not too bad, as long as the piston(s) are ok its not the end of the world.
