I'm here to show you another path (The Unit)

Yup, the moment of truth has arrived - after selling my Carlton earlier last year cos' of getting a new company car that I was now taxed on I am faced with the prospect of driving my Skoda Superb Estate in the snow for the first time.

Scary as hell!

Despite its pedigree it doesn't cope well in slippery conditions (Front wheel drive so what do you expect), last night I could have done with my old 'Betsy' back if only for the fact I know I would have felt safer using rear wheel drive - I actually had to reverse over a hump back bridge at Brockley because the front end couldn't handle the slight incline - not good.

This was the reason why the last 2 winters when we had snow I used the Carlton instead of the Vectra - no probs, wish I had Betsy back again... Sad

A Vectra? Driven and worked on them, bags o' shite. Carlton is a far superior car.

Get another Carlton, you know you want one. Fantastic all year round cars. I was going up an incline better than a Fiesta, until the prick stopped and I couldn't get any forward motion.

Besides, you gotta hang the arse end. Its what rwd are made for.

You are so right mate, and boy am I regretting selling my 'Baby'... Cry

Thankfully the Vectra has now gone which is why I ended up with the Skoda - in the dry (and wet) its a brilliant car but with all this 'orrible white stuff about - every bit as tricky as the vectra was.

RWD is what I prefer - it just makes perfect sense - but try telling that to modern car manufacturers... Undecided

When my Carlton was written off, it was a no brainer, I had to get another Carlton.

Ok, they may not be nothing special to a lot of folk, but that's because they ain't had one.

If the ruddy HMRC wasn't taxing me to the hilt on the Skoda my Betsy would never have had to go - couple that with Lewisham doubling the residents permit fee to £120 a year - well, there just isn't enough money any more - doesn't mean to say I wouldn't have another one though given the chance... - or my old 'Betsy' back... Cry

Don't tell me that the resident's permit fee is to park your car at home?

Oh yeh!
What with the company car and my old Betsy it would have cost me £240 a year just to park them both up!!!

And the bl**dy mayor of Lewisham said he makes no apology for putting up the permit charges - banker! (Or something similar...)

That's ridiculous. Why do you have to pay to park your car at home? I have on road parking outside my bungalow and its free.

That's the London councils for you - most of them have adopted the same practice...

TAX TAX TAX TAX TAX bonus.

Residents parking shooting up in Croydon but still cheaper than Lewisham - you must have more rich people there then  Undecided. I bet its like Croydon - they dont actualy guarantee you a space but you still have to pay for it. Aparently the reason I cannot get a job even a low paid one is because there are none in Croydon. I only moved to Croydon to make commuting less than 1.5 hours each way !. What with the riots and no local jobs I find mself wondering why I still live here.

I read somewhere that London and the SE is one of the most expensive places to live in the world. Oh and that most people who do real jobs (e.g. nurses, mechanics, bus drivers etc) cannot actually afford to live in London and the SE.

Sorry wandered of a bit there - Of course a Carlton is better but you cannot keep a car for occaisional use these days.

Not for the council though, they will want lots more than that !.

On a practical note does an LPG conversion save anything more than the fuel costs. I seem to recall that it makes the car exempt from the London congestion charge zone charges.

Dunno, but the initial outlay for the lpg isn't exactly pocket change.
