BMW 2.5 TD is not as good as you think. I've one in my Rover 75. They all have a vibration frequency at 1800rpm. Lots have not had the PCV filter replaced which can blow the turbo and oil seals. They also run very cool and the mpg is nothing like claimed. Its heavy and inefficient but does go on forever.

Vorsprung durch teknik. No way...............But most people believe the excellent advertising.

The Carlton 2.3D is rough. If its the Peugeot 2.3TD I had one in the Ford Sierra. Everything buzzed!

I drove both the Ford Sierra and Peugeot 405 non turbo versions and I would have been quicker on roller skates. Sluggish, noisy, vibrated like mad.

Sorry mate but your wrong there. The BMW 2.5TD (6cyl) was fitted to the omega and is a very durable engine if a little thirsty, it is a big engine though in a big car. Its not that quick in Omega guise either as it was de-tuned. The engine in the Rover 75 is the M47 2.0 engine, strong engine but most dont get looked after which leads to bad fuel economy, Mines never drops below 40mpg which isnt bad for such a big car. There also really easy to work on and dont eat turbos or clutches like fords or the VAG diesels. They will take a lot more punishment aswell.

I recently owned a 2.3TD estate and it was as a great workhorse, it was no slouch either once id serviced it. Again, most never have regualar oil changes. What goes against them is the fact that they arn't that easy to work on and parts are getting scarce. The timing guide went on mine and it took me ages to find another. Aside from this they are very durable engines. It was better on juice than my old fellas 2.5TD omega aswell and that BMW engine weighs a ton!

The non turbo engines fitted to the Bedfords CF's are very slow apprently so the turbo engines are quite sought after.

The reason they shake so much is down to the 5 bearing crank, they stuck the same engine in the Frontera with a 7 bearing crank and vibration is greatly reduced.

Raising their own standard, whereby the standard being their own flag maybe. They do need to raise their own standard.
GM Europe (including Opel and Vauxhall) have a long way to go before they come anything like close to Audi, Mercedes Benz or BMW!!!

Gotta agree with you on that score. I wouldn't have a new Vauxhall if I had the money. Well, I could for £200 a month on mobility. But why? My Carlton is far superior to a new Vauxhall and it doesn't cost me nowhere near £200 a month. Come next year the Carlton will be worth the same as what it is this year. A new Vauxhall wouldn't be.

I thought that but then again they put the 1.8 and 2.0 cavalier lump in a carlton, as you say the 2.3 probrably sounded more powerful on the spec sheet.  Was the 2.3 in any previous model to the carlton?

As far as i know they stuck the non turbo in the bedford CF. It also went in the diesel senators which had the bonnet bulge on them,

i have to spring to my defence here as i'm misunderstood or misinterpretted. I'm not promoting Vauxhall/Opel at all ! Indeed the opposite. The point I've been making for a while as an engineer trained to take emotions out of decisions is that you should not believe all the 'German' advertising and what I know to be wrong.

You will see from the above previous post the unreliability of a range of German designed cars! Not all German cars but some. Hence use facts when making decisions which I think most people do.

Some interesting facts from the 2011 JD Power survey on reliability:-

49 awards made to various classes of car - compact, sub compact, 4x4 etc

BMW 1
Mercedes benz 4
VW/Audi 0
Opel 0
Ford 5

Most went to Japanese cars. Ford are currently one of the most reliable cars due to the Mazda influence. In 'my' opinion VW/Audi and Opel/Vauxhall are the most unreliable - German designed. My survey showed BMW good but not perfect. Mercedes have improved their reliability a lot over the last few years.

Being a bit older than most I can remember some of the worst cars designed are German! The beetle was probably one of the worst cars ever designed in 'my' opinion. Hopeless mpg, roadholding, comfort etc but it sold millions because at the time cars were more unreliable and the beetle did at least start and get you there, in a fashion. I've had 2 engines disintigrate in my lifetime, looked after and fully serviced. Both Volkswagen.

Having upset owners of German cars I would have to say BMW are good, if you can afford the servicing and parts and the image they have of aggresion. They are priced competitively but get you on servicing and parts costs.

Had 3 BMWs, E30, E32 and E38. I would have another one, if I could afford the petrol for it. Some parts' prices weren't too bad, others were coronary inducing. What you have to remember with the E38 7 series, they were V8s and V12, so they ain't cheap to run, but a superb car to live with. Or mine was until the gearbox went tits up and I was staring down a £2.5k repair bill.

I can remember too many years back when a friend at work had a BMW in for a service  and front brake pads at a BMW dealership and the bill was over £1000!

How much?!! That's a piss take, if ever there was one. I assume that the car in question wasn't a basic 316i?

A guy had an E30 750iL with a knackered water pump. BMW Swansea wanted £100 per hour, plus vat and plus water pump. Time to do the job, ten hours, say BMW. I'm going back about nine years ago. Anyways, I had the job of replacing the water pump at my work. It was a bitch, but not difficult. Best bit was filling and bleeding the cooling system, so I could road test it. 5.0 litre V12 with AC Schnitzer camshafts, lovely.

When I used to go on vodc, I remember posting up about the gearbox fault that mine had. It put Stuart off buying one. Paying £1.7k and then the gearbox goes. When I had mine, the only place that sold catalytic converters for it, was a main dealer. Cost £650 each and there's two of them. I had a front windscreen replaced on mine as it had developed a crack. Luckily I had it done on my insurance for £60. Apparently they were supposed to be about a grand plus fitting from BMW, or so I was led to believe. If I ever had the money to run one again, I would have one. Super cars to drive.

Are any of you gona convert, transplant a diesal into your existing car? I dont fink so. . . So use the best bits off this car ie; the body etc, and leave the one bit that lets it down - the donkey lump under the bonnet haha!

Ok, its diesel and while that may not be appealing to most, surely as a Carlton it needs saving? If its too far gone to be saved, fair enough, but all Carltons need a chance to keep going.
