Twice today I have got out the car and I can smell burning. The brakes aren't binding and the tyres don't appear to be rubbing. There's nothing knocking or banging. Any ideas?

I checked the belts on Sunday when I did the weekly levels check and they were fine. Incidentally, the car doesn't use any fluids, but I like to check them for peace of mind.

If it smells like brakes but isnt then it could possibly be clutch slip.

Have you carefully inspected the cam cover gasket ? even a slight seepage onto the exhaust manifold will cause a fair old stink

No drips from the diff onto the exhaust? mine did: Or from the rear of the gearbox onto the exhaust (mine dripped from there when the speedo sensor became loose)

A lengthy process but I would try this to make sure you do not have a short and the potential for a fire. Electricians can comment if this will not work.
Take the fuses out and on the power (battery) side of the contacts check the voltages are the same as the battery. If one is less than the others you have a short in that wire and not protected by the fuse & the risk of a fire. On the power supply side of the fuse to the accessories, the fuse should stop any risk of fire.
Will this test work?

Has some joker stuck something on your exhaust. Well perhaps a passing innocent plastic bag has got snagged in amongst the exhaust.

There's an old saying in the electrical/electronics world "If in doubt, burn it out" (just keep an extinguisher handy)

When I used to drive for a certain well known motorcycle club, their phrase was 'if in doubt, knock 'em out'.

Haha Di but yes, that's the magic tree air freshener. That's the only smell on the inside, unless I've had a curry, baked beans, mushy peas, Paula's cooking ........ Smell was only on outside, after I got out of car. No I am NOT the smell, before some wit comes out with it

lol.
Havent the foggiest then. I think most stuff has been covered by the chaps above. I was going to suggest the wiring loom connector in the base of the door pillar for the rear door but when mine went there was burning and smoke in the cabin - worth a check though...
Disconnect battery (need to do this if its as bas a mine was - a mangled melted mess ...) then prise out the rubber gromment at the base of the outer pillar (open both front and rear door for ease of access) then check loom connector join.
