Am I the only TC member in south Wales?

« on: January 29, 2012, 06:38:18 PM »

Now that I know mk3 saloon and estate rear door cards are the same, that brings me nicely to my next question.

How easy/difficult/fiddly etc to strip a door card down and re-cover it?

The f/n/s door card has been removed unsympathetically in the past and and its kinda buggered. However, I do have a set of four door cards out of my Diplomat. The f/o/s one, isn't the best. The back ones are okay.

Now, the interior of me GLi is blue and matches and the door cards from me Diplomat are grey. I know blue and grey doesn't go together.

I'm thinking of doing the door cards in cloth or similar, so it all matches.

Also I'm thinking about keeping the wood inserts on the door cards. I got the wood surround that goes in the console, which isn't fitted at present.

Any hints/advice/tips/pointers/do's/don'ts etc welcome.

When I did mine, I wanted so simply stick some leather where the cloth usually lives. It ended up a job of epic proportions - luckily, it was my job at the time!

Here's how I did the black perforated leather bits on mine:
I made up backing cards (just for the leather) with large headed paper clips to hold them in, then glue on some foam, then cover in leather, then mark the holes for the paper clips, cut into the door card for the clips and fix.

It's hard to get the trim to sit right if you can't get the edges perfect, and that would be too much buggering about for me.

The blue bits were easy in comparison!

Re-using the door trim was something I wanted to do - I painted them silver, but there's no way I could get the fixings through the new panel into the fixing points.

Hope this helps! Wink

Do you know what "Nemesis" means? A righteous infliction of retribution manifested by an appropriate agent. Personified in this case by an 'orrible c*nt... me.

That's great, cheers Pete.

I'm not doing leather as I'd be in the same boat as I'm in now, eg, plastic is cold in winter and hot in summer. So I was thinking about recovering them in some plush upholstery, so the principle is the same.
