Some of you may know that lots of new reg docs were stolen from DVLC, so they are replacing the current ones, millions of them, with new red ones. They ask you to destroy the old one. It will take them a while to do them all.

So, when I bought the Diamond estate recently and being interested in the vehicle history, and having found every previous owner, I asked DVLC when i informed them of change of ownership, to let me have the new red doc AND the old document for historical reasons. As everybody else can keep their old document I didn't think this would be a problem.

Did they return it? No. A plain stupid decision. I did however keep a copy which will have to do.

Sorry to disagree here but the DVLA would never ask you to destroy old documents -- they would ask you to return them for replacements yes but never destroy.
they would need the original back in order to send out the new one.

You sure you haven't been the victim of a hoax or scam?

It makes you wonder how this thief happened.

I'd have a guest and say they outsourced something to a foreign country where id thief is a common place.

I'm saying in this senario.  I'm not labelling everyone.

Incidentally, this theft was reported on the BBC in January 2010!

The documents themselves went missing in 2006 - this is very old news...

Just spoken to DVLA - they are replacing the V5 with red versions but you are NOT TO DESTROY the old one until such time as you receive the new one, they aim to complete this task by the end of 2012.

Be patient... Wink

End of 2012. By which time some red ones will have gone missing. Note I am not saying someone stole them am I ?.

To quote from the letter (INS215) that came from DVLA with my new red V5C:-
Q.What do I do with my old blue V5C?
A.You must destroy the blue V5C for this vehicle now.

The point I was trying to make was that everybody could keep there old blue V5C but they would not give me back the old one for historical purposes.

Aah, now I understand - you had already received the Red document - I thought you were advising people to destroy the old blue one before getting its replacement - that didn't make sense.

Sorry, my misunderstanding of what you meant.

I probably didn't explain it properly.
