Mine tramlines as well but I dont think the steering box has been adjusted. Hell of a job to undo the nut. T bar and extensions job. Got nearly a quarter of a turn on the screw. Might be better now as there is no slack now.

What pressures you running at?. The book says 33 front and 36 rear for the Diamond 15"wheels, but off course its a different set up with the 17" rims. Ran quite nice on the way from Alastairs on about 22-25psi. Thats a bit low though.

Must measure the circumference and compare it with the correct ones to make sure the speedo is accurate.

A note of caution : -

There are instructions for adjusting the steering box in TIS but it seems to be quite a procedure to do it properly; get it wrong and I believe that it may cause damage to the box  Sad

I've always just screwed in until tight and then backed off a bit and then tightened the nut but I'll look in TIS. The Diamond has the variable steering so perhaps i had better look. Thanks.

Couldnot get into my TIS ! I think what it may say is that as there is wear in the central steering position in the box more than on full lock, if you adjust in the centre position, then it will be too tight on full lock and will stress everything. Adjust off the centre position. Correct?

Yes, adjust off centre position ! but it goes much further by saying 'take off the steering arm' Roll Eyes use a torque meter and gives maximum torque etc. etc.

Hence my comment "quite a procedure" Sad

I adjust with the front of the car off the ground and the engine not running so there is no power steering effect.

Goodness knows why you have to play around with the idler but the idler could be worn out as they are sometimes and you are trying to adjust the box when the idler is worn.

If you raise the front of the car and the steering is loose on both locks I cannot see any serious damage being done. Think TIS is over careful and making sure the box is not too tight & GM get a bill. I've used the above method on all my Carltons over big mileages.

Sounds reasonable to me Wink

Been doing some historical research. The first registered owner was a funeral director and the car was used for occasional transport of..............Owner did describe it as an occasional hearse. Didn't go into details with him!

Strangely the 2nd owner who worked for the funeral directors had the blacking out done.
That means the glass was not black for the occasional transport of.............

Now got the history right back to the supplying dealer Elt Brothers Vauxhall in Yardley Birmingham now Lookers, so the mileage of 65k is verified. Apparently the Elk Bros used it for 6 months as a demo car. I was a bit concerned that it may have been clocked early in its life but all seems accurate. First owner is looking for the bill of sale which he may have. Historically interesting for me and future owners.

Having been involved with classics for about 45 years I'm interested in vehicle histories. Check yours now and see what comes up if you can trace it back.

I can't see the history of my blue barge being of interest. But you never know.

Unfortunately Lookers have destroyed all records further back than 7 years (legal requirement) and not unexpectantly have no interest. Anybody got any info on Elt Bros in S.Yardley, Birmingham? Photos of how it was etc.
