Well, I won the auction, arrived today and set about giving it a good steam clean. The door cards fit to perfection - I guess the chasis of these Carltons/Rekords/Viceroys/Royales/Senators etc are all the same.

Will tackle the seats over the weekend, not expecting any problems.

The colour is exactly the same, just without the pattern, and the door cards are nicer - so overall it won't look much different from the original interior. Also has the switch for electric/heated mirrors in the drivers card, so will probably upgrade to them as well to go with the electric windows. Will be a real one-off when finished.

In the meantime, if anyone wants to purchase an excellent interior for their Carlton/Rekord/Viceroy/Royale/Senator etc, let me know. Will be going on ebay sometime soon.

Then will get round to tackling the lumpy engine.

Got the front seats in, just (they're much heavier and firmer), having a little trouble with the rears. The sizing is the same, fit where they should but the clips that hold them in place are proving tricky. I know there's a knack to bouncing the bottom into the hooks, but they don't want to go. Any advice?

Have bounced and bounced! A hot sweat in cold weather just isn't right. A big hammer may do it.

Yeh, tricky buggers - just needs brute force...
Once you get the knack you will wonder why you had so much trouble in the first place... Cheesy

I think the wire rod on the new seat is slightly higher that the original, may need to prang it out a bit or get Giant Haystacks to sit on it.

Or my ex wife. She's put a lot of weight on over the past four years plus.

Well, I have tried and tried but the rear seats just don't want to know. They are identical to look at, but the bottom seat rods that go under the floor hooks are about 1cm higher on the new seats and despite my best efforts, won't clip in. The old one goes in nice and easy so I know I am doing it right.

So, out come the new front seats and back goes the old interior. What a waste of time, freezing my balls off for hours! At least the door cards fit.

Brainstorming. Have you got access to the car they came out off. Maybe the hooks were different. Maybe you can re-mount the hooks longer any photos to deduce from ?.

I don't have access to the donor car unfortunately. The hooks are welded on to the chasis. I could get someone to weld a 'higher' rod on the underneath of the seat, but this will only be more time and money spent and no guarantee they will fit flushly. Even the backs of the rear seats don't fit perfectly, they ride out of their top hooks everyime I try and jam the bottom part in.

Decided to give this one more go. Anyone know a decent car interior specialist in the south Essex area that could fit the seats for me?

Having tried and failed to install these seats, they are now surplus to requirements. If anyone wants a full set of Mk 1 Senator seats in good condition, please let me know. All offers considered, thanks.

Won't be trying any more, prefer the old seats anyway s more comfy...

These need to go asap as they're filling my shed, any takers before the weekend or they'll go in the tip.

Before you do that could I suggest you give Derek at GM6 Spares a call & see if hes interested in them. He does restos on mainly older Vxs & may take it off your hands.

Be a shame to bin them, but I know myself that storage space is an issue

I know of Derek, he might well have them but getting them from Essex to Cornwall will be a problem!
