Is anybody confused by all the engine codes that some members seem to know. I'm confused!

Done a search and various bits and pieces on TC, so can anybody list the codes such as NE, SE, SEJ, C30XEI etc etc. Also and more importantly what are the differences as it affects parts you buy or swap.

Do these have to be broken down into 1.8,2.0,2.6,3.0 12V/24V or is an SE for instance the same on all or some engines?

I dont know if its possible to put this in some sort of special reference area in TC rather than disappearing into computer hyperspace on TC where its difficult to find.

I've noticed with interest that the 3.0L diamond code 30 SEJ has a derated engine but only 4PS. The 'J' denotes a "throttled output". I understand that this is done by a breathing restriction by modified silencers. But why derate it from 204PS to 200PS which is a tiny derating. hardly seems worthwhile.

Can it be that a component is only rated up to 200PS like the GM auto box perhaps or another component that is specific to the diamond 3.0L?

Can it be that the 3.0L Diamond estate with the 204PS silencers were noisier in the estate so they fitted quieter silencers?

Anybody know the answer?
