just a quick question, is there a separate regulator or charge relay on these?

Ive recently replaced mine with a recon unit due to a non charging situation, however this unit isnt charging either, ive checked across the battery at 12.5v and from the alternator terminal to battery at around the same..

Got a second replacement coming FOC in case the recon is somehow duff, but i'm concerned something else isnt right.

I had something similar ages ago, i swapped the earth lead and put it to the rocker cover. went ok after that.
iirc there is a small type of plastic that is bolted then wired to the back of the unit, not sure what that does but could be the issue? Huh

check the alternator earth that runs along the adjuster strap they go brittle with age and fail on a regular basis easiest way is to use a jump lead from the bracket to the battery earth and check your voltages again!!

the reason for this by the way is that the alternator is isolated from a direct earth path via the rubber mountings it sits on!!

Mitch 1965, the guy at the factors i talked to said that the extra  box wired to the alternator terminals was a radio suppressor? And i wired that up to the new unit.

Ok chris, will check the earths, should be connected but as you say, has been disturbed so could well be up the creek after 20yrs or so.

If you can get another one made up & re seat it then it'll be fine. I had a heavy duty one made up for £2.50 iirc.
