Erich Bitter's models based on Opel running gear.
I had a Ford Orion Ghia. Same engine as XR3i. Went like a polished turd off a greased shovel. Tin worn killed it.
I do miss my old Renault 12. Never let me down.

Mini's (the original ones) hardly see any about now unless it's at a show. Other than that any car made before 1995, most have succumbed to the scrappage scheme

In the two rear windows of my estate there is a sticker which says scrappage survivor. I didn't agree with the scrappage scheme. Too many useable cars were lost

Got mine off ebay. Its very rare I see anything older than R/S reg around here. I think my blue barge has to be one of the oldest daily drivers in the area.

Not many people want old cars nowadays so they seem to go for scrap much earlier than they used to. Young people now seem to want a new car straight away! I was 42 before I got my first new car at an employee discount rate at Ford (even though I wasn't a permy). New cars are relatively cheap compared with salaries now. But still beyond most people.

It's all about finance now, three years free servicing/warranty, no mot to worry about and you get a new car at the end if you wish and continue the cycle. Just a shame they're all bland euro boxes now.

The cycle goes on & sure folk thought the same of the Carlton etc when they were new, folk had cars such as victors, Fb's to FE's. These new cars will also end up as classics in their time, such as my Vec-c,, When i bought my mk1 astra (5 years ago), i never thought of it as a classic,,

I can have a mobility car for £200 a month or thereabouts. No way do I want one. I would rather have my Carlton and it doesn't cost me £200 a month.
Long live the classics. Especially Carltons.
I used to work for Renault back in the eighties. Its where I learnt the trade. As this thread is about cars that have disappeared, there are many Renault models that I used to see coming in for servicing that are no longer around.
Renault Dauphine, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 never saw many come in, 14 probably the worst Renault ever, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 25, 30. I know the 19 is missing, but they weren't out then.

Still see 21's around here, some in the savanna status, Last time i saw a 16 & 17 were at shows, but even the classic car show didn't have a 17 on their stand. Another one that you hardly see,(well i haven't for ages. The fraud Probe,,

I guess that's the beauty of living where I do, on the edge of europe's only desert. It's so dry here, I still see working R4's, the van version loaded down with the days produce, struggling up and down these mountain roads. A SEAT 500 original paintwork, been driven by the owner since new, the car is in better nick than him! Never had a prang, always serviced by the same garage..... brilliant.
Although the spanish seem to like their new cars (much cheaper) some tend to hang on to their old ones, and those that are on the road are working vehicles, not show pieces. I really must remember to take my camera out with me every time I go out, get some snaps in.

Old VW beatles. Where have they gone? Probably one of the worst cars ever designed so shows you how much the public knows.
Terrible road holding. Hopeless in a crash They do rust! Anything above a 1.5 blows up. Drops no.3 valve 1.7 engine should not have got out of the factory! (Not the water cooled modern one) Hopeless economy and thermal efficiency.
Only good point, no water to freeze. Suppose thats why people bought them.
I had 2 campers. Dropped valves twice. They even fitted retarding rotor arms on the vans to stop them blowing up. Timing a few degrees to early and bearings went. To late and they overheated and you did not know.
As they kept going most of the time I suppose they were popular but you could retard the ignition of every other car and get total reliability.
The follow on car? The K70. Hopeless.
Current VW & AUDI's not very good now! seen many broken down.

I beg to differ having built and worked on many Type 1 engines right from 13/1600cc's up to 2276cc, all from the standard crankcase (work carried out as necessary etc). The 1500 was probably the very worst engine they ever released in that variety. Under powered, single port, no oil cooler, it's no wonder they scrapped it .

The 1500 was probably the very worst engine they ever released in that variety. Under powered, single port, no oil cooler, it's no wonder they scrapped it . Maybe the technology and parts have developed. I ran the VW campers when they were current and dropping no.3 cylinder was come. Stopped on a motorway?No.3 cylinder. Check the exhaust tappet clearance regularly and if it closes the valve has stretched. They had sodium filled valves to keep them cool but unfortunately that reduced the steel cross section. As the engine moved from 1200 to 1300 to 1500cc they increased the valve head diameter and the stem diameter of the valve and the guide diameter. On the 1600 there was not enough metal in the head casting to increase the guide and stem diameter but they put in stiffer springs and increased head diameter. Bang! 70k miles on the first engine,30k on the second. The 1700cc air cooled engine I understand did not last as long! As this was at least 20 years ago I would suggest that there is new technology in the component materials nowadays. However, I still see them stopped on motorways. My camper on the Medway bridge used to change lanes in a cross wind even when I was waiting for it to do it. Very dangerous. In the USA they used to get blown off the road in the prairy states. However, my 1200cc camper just went on and on forever. 23mpg. Yes 23mpg. 55mph flat out.
