Hello im new on here and also new to vauhalls which is the reason im here to try and learn a bit more and hopefully get over the issue ive encountered.

I have a 2.0 8v engine mated to a Carlton r25 box, i had a noisy thrust bearing so have taken the gearbox out although i have managed to get a new clutch kit, the input shaft sleeve where the thrust bearing sits is quite badly warn and im reluctant to put it back together in the state it is in. Im hoping someone on here can advise me where i can get the part (as its no longer produced, ive rang everywhere) or a method of fixing the sleeve? or finally a replacement box?

thanks for your help

Looks like the thrust bearing has seized up at some point and been spinning on the sleeve, must've been making a racket Tongue  Your best bet is to get another box as I can't see an easy way of repairing it?

Does anyone know if 2.0 omega boxes are the same Huh

This is an old trick which should work but I cannot guarantee it.

If a bearing race has been spinning on a shaft and its not too worn, you can centre pop the shaft in many places. The more wear, the more centre pops. When you slide the bearing on you may then have to give it a small tap. I have done this on numerous occasions without failure unless the bearing seizes again. If you centre pop and the bearing keeps turning, then the shaft is too worn. A locktite gel MAY work in this case.

To be sure put some locktite on it as well. There are a number of types of locktite, so look them up on the internet. You want the one where it will lock the bearing BUT the one where you have to give the bearing a bang to release the locktite. You want to be able to get the bearing off next time! I would not trust the locktite you get in B&Q. I would buy an industrial one from a good tool supplier. They should be able to advise you which one to have.

Somebody on here may be able to tell you the Locktite number.

all that sleeve does is guide the thrust bearing (there is an oil seal behind it)

tbh i would see if you can slide a new bearing (on the release fork/arm)to see if it will snag if it does try smoothing the burrs off with some emery and try again if you still have no joy pm me and ill see what i can sort out for you i have got a few spares knocking about!

Oops. Looks like I got it wrong and forgot whats in a clutch. Its about 40 years since I stripped a clutch! It seems the bearing should turn on the sleeve?. Good advise though on what to do with a spinning bearing shell on a shaft that shouldn't.

Designers dont necessarily make good mechanics!

Not to worry at least you can design and others can mechanic. As for myself - I can only guess and a little knowledge is a dangerous thing  Shocked.

It seems the bearing should turn on the sleeve?

the bearing sits on a carrier (plastic usually) this slides on the tube

the damage shown on the picture seems to be unusually severe i have seen that sort of scoring before but not to that degree

at a guess the carrier melted allowing the bearing to rattle about on the shaft

a good few years ago i found a metal carrier that just needed a new bearing unfortunately i left it on the car when i sold it!! bugger!!!!!
