For those of you with the later Carlton. The viscous fan was changed from the one having the large nut at the back, to a unit with a single allen bolt through the front. The fan from the 2.6 & 3.0 24 valve are the same as the later 2.0. Just gives a bit more chance of finding one in the scrappy's, should you need to.

Viscous Fails in one of two ways Failure mode 1- Loss of drive (Fan blades freewheel all the time but when engine is hot they don't "Whoof" as the engine is reved) Not responsible for any personal injury here but test method I came up with in the dark ages (with the engine hot and at tickover) was - stick a carrot into the fam blades if it breaks the carrot - it's OK if the carrot stops the blades it's FUBAR Failure mode 2- Lock up of drive (Fan blades driven at water pump speed all the time and not freewheeling when not required Easy to spot this - Fuel consumption will be dreadfull - the engine will go "Whoof" "Whoooooooof" when reved - Hot or cold Other test is using the Carrot again with the engine nice and cold and at tickover - stick a carrot into the fam blades if it breaks the carrot - it's FUBAR - if the carrot stops the blades it's freewheeling OK so try same test when hot

Nah - I'm in the Monza - thats my baby Filmed by a mate Rich in his 4.0L 24V Senator - we were on our way back to his (on the motorway) I needed to put some more silencing back into the exhaust - it was straight thro all the way to the back box - so we were gonna put a pair of small mids into it!! If you want to see the full size version ClickyThe laughter at the end was Rich too........ It's not as fast as it looks due to cutting out frames to reduce the file size!!!!

Had a tinker on my dads 24v senny today and noticed that theres no viscous fan! He told me he hasn't run one for 5 years! and just lets the thermostatic fan do the work!

As long as he has a WQ waxstat rather than a WH and he changes it every two years thats fine If he has the original WH waxstat and has never changed it - Dangerous situation - it will fail without warning - it will do it when you are stuck in traffic on a hot summer day - your engine temp will go through the red - It will probably warp the head Been there done that - it is a well know issue

Err Above info only applies to the 24V (fitted with AC) Hence my warning post specific to your dads car - it was first hand experience 10 years ago and it took some effort to sort out the resultant mess!!!

Temp switch Yes different operating ranges WH = std on a 24V and doesn't switch till too farking late or never when they get old WQ = Hot country option switches on at 93 (from memory) so quite frequently in traffic that way you know it's working

Just thought id let you know how i got on. Last weekend i removed the fan and fitted the different temprature sensor. So far ive done about 300 miles in it including a 150 mile or so round trip of mixed traffic. The temprature stays just above 80 degrees apart from once in heavy when it climbed to just above 90 and the fan cut in. Now that fan shifts some air and soon brings the engine back down to 85 degrees. There wasnt a noticable difference in performance but the cars warms up quicker which gives better fuel economy from cold. Prior to the fan my 15mile trip to work and back sees me return about 24mpg, this week it's been just above 25mpg (and ive been late twice so iv had give it some!). Finally it also gives better access to the front of the engine. Maybe stick with the viscous if you do a lot of town drving, but for motorway work and winter use ditch the fan and fit the hot countires sensor for sure.

Your temperature at normal running is why your fuel consumption is poor - giving it some or not............ Glad you like the WQ - I've put one of those in every 24V car I've owned

Your temperature at normal running is why your fuel consumption is poor - giving it some or not............ - what temprature is normal? It sits at what would be 85 degrees i guess, bassically the next mark down from 90. The best MPG ive ever had is 30mpg on the motorway and i was plodding. Car gets driven normally most of time. I change the thermostat and coolant about 6months ago? Glad you like the WQ - I've put one of those in every 24V car I've owned

Yes it is, but youl have to give them the part code, its one of the threads somewhere. Its about £15 and a five minute job to do.

Hi, got to say what a fantastic car the Carlton is, can see why you guys are so enthusiastic about them. Superb site for info btw, learnt so much I wish i had found it before I bought my carlton, Nice to be able to talk with some expert knowledge behind you. Down to business, I have got same prob with my viscous fan so can any one help answer two questions. I think my fan has packed up (Engine overheats. Tried carrot test, stopped fan when engine was HOT!! J reg 2L diplomat) 1. How difficult is it to swap with breakers yard replacement (I can hold a spanner and do some diy around cars) 2. Can I fit an after market electrical fan from rallydesign and safely ignore thermo-viscous fan ? if so what depth and diameter should I look for ( http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/catalog/index.php?cPath=531&osCsid=0f1653b2492974cbe19641ec748e7991Cheer for any help

Superb site for info btw, learnt so much I wish i had found it before I bought my carlton, Nice to be able to talk with some expert knowledge behind you. I don't know about the expert bit but I reckon between us all we've done most jobs on the cars Down to business, I have got same prob with my viscous fan so can any one help answer two questions.
I think my fan has packed up (Engine overheats. Tried carrot test, stopped fan when engine was HOT!! J reg 2L diplomat) Viscous is defo shot then 1. How difficult is it to swap with breakers yard replacement (I can hold a spanner and do some diy around cars) Easy but trick is finding one from a breakers that is any good - it one of the few components that I actually think it's better off buying new - it's so critical to life of an engine/headgasket Has your Dippy got AC - if it has it already has a fan in front of the rad - much better to use that and control it with a WQ or WH or Carlton 2.0 equivilent If it hasn't better to use a second hand electric fan from a Senator or Carlton - will bolt straight in Cheer for any help No probs at all
