While I was looking through my brochures, I was thinking about the Carlton diesel models. I regularly drove a mk3 Carlton diesel and I enjoyed driving it. I'm going back about seven or eight years ago, since I last drove it. I don't seem to recall seeing many diesel Carltons, even back then.
That leads me to the question, does anybody have an idea, approximately, how many mk3 Carlton diesels were produced? I'm curious, as I don't think there can be many left.

Last one I seen for sale was around 2005 that had suffered from the hands of vandals and all windows were smashed. Only other I seen before that was about 1994 as it was in front of me holding me up to get home.

Craig used to have an estate.
In 2.3 TD form it boosted the abilty to........smoke, rattle, need gear changes at the slightest hill oh and of course provide about as much excitment whilst driving as trying to do a 3 legged long jump.
or of you could buy a petrol one that did about the same MPG,was smooth, didnt rattle and of course it shared the same engine as the cavalier, astra etc.
2 Carlton CD TD are left 4 TD CLubs 0 DL are left 7 L TD
So not many at all, more GSI left!, although if i found a CD TD i would throw the awlful cast iron engine, and wedge in the much better DTI engine, then it would make a nice car

Who's diesel engine was it? GM's ? Sourced from another company?
I remember the Ford Sierra had a 2.3 diesel which was a Peugeot. Totally unsuitable for the Sierra. The whole of the dash rattled! Bought it new and just had to sell it after a year. Drove me mad. Probably still around as I undersealed it completely and rust proofed all the cavities.

One of Adam Opels finest then! I had one of these as my first Carlton and this was non turbo! Took ages to get to any decent speed and, yes, as soon as a hill appeared on the distant horizon it started to slow down. Some say the engine was derived from the 4 pot 2.3 petrol that powered the chevette as it had such a strong bottom end it could withstand the extra compression without any extra beefing up.
I cannot confirm this so it is only hearsay.

The one I drove was a TD and wasn't a bad car to drive. It was a few years ago.
The Peugeot diesel, non turbo, in a Sierra is gutless. Me mate had one and I'd have been quicker walking. Saying that, I've yet to drive a Peugeot that was enjoyable. The 604 was ok, but that's about it.
Anyways, I take it that the Carlton diesel wasn't the best Vauxhall/Opel to hit these shores. Probably why they're as rare as they are. Maybe someone has kept one, just for the novelty value, cos it won't be for the monetary value.
I wonder if anyone kitted up one up in a replica Lotus bodykit? I wouldn't put it past some of the idiots with what they do to some cars. I'm not referring to anyone who kits up theirs on here, I'm referring to the likes of them on Barryboys.

I'd love a carlton with the BMW 2.5 TD from the Omega in it, that is a very good diesel lump.

the chevette engine was derived from a 3.6 liter diesel V8 from the states vauxhall/opel then cut it in half made it a petrol in 1.8 and 2.0 form and then to the 2.3 and 2.6 16v (a very rare engine) the 16v heads were developed by Bill Blydenstein for race and rally cars

Got a 2.5 turbo BMW diesel engine in my Rover 75. They all have a vibration frequency at about 1800rpm. Its certainly a solid engine and very heavy. They can do lots of miles but so can lighter competitors. I dont think the engine is anything special when you take away the image that the Germans have developed. They also clog up the PCV valve regularly and blowing turbos because of it are known. BMW have swopped and changed their PCV components quite regularly, fistly with a PCV mesh and now they have gone back to the clogging felt filter. They have the usual electronic components such as cam position sensors that play up. This isn't that surprising really because as diesels go BMW are quite new. The best current diesels I think are the Peugeots as they with Citroen have been producing diesels since the 1930's. The first diesel in a car was the Ricardo/Citroen. Ford have now koined forces with peugeot Citroen to produce diesels.
