I'm not exactly clued up on these engines, but I would imagine that to destroy one would probably take some doing. I suppose how its been maintained or the lack of maintenance may play a part?

I did put a con rod through the block of an XR3i lump in my younger days. I did give it some serious abuse.

Also I have seen a Volvo B200 engine, in a 740, throw a rod. The timing belt snapped and destroyed the engine.

I digress, so back on topic.

There are many reasons a con-rod could go through the engine block - component failure being the main culprit. Thrashing the engine might have not got anything to do with it - unless you're not telling the whole story. You've gone this far, Ian......so finish it!
Might as well get hung for a sheep as a lamb. Wink

Circa 2003 1.8L vauxhall engines have thrown a lot of rods through the block. Happened on my daughters Zafira. Known problem due to incorrect torqueing of the caps in the factory. Its VERY important to use the correct torque.
