The faith has finally been restored!!

« on: November 30, 2011, 08:44:40 PM »

Hi guys.

I've been offered a set of hoses for the top and bottom of the radiator and the expansion tank from a 12 valve Gold top.

My question is this, will they fit my 12 valve Gsi? I'm thinking that they will, but want to make sure.
If any of you guru's could confirm, it would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Catho.

I'm pretty sure they will mate.
The main difference with the gold top (from a maintenance point of view) is that it has a serpentine belt rather that v belts.

Thanks Murph, I was 99.9% sure they'd fit but wanted a second opinion.

Mine are fine (touches wood), but I would like them as a spare set......you never know!

Now you have them, you probably won't need them. Had you not got them, different story. Apply the law of sod! That's how it works in my case anyway.

I don't know if it applies to the 3.0 12v engines as well as the 3.0 24v lumps, but on the 24v there is a short piece of hose that is a 90 degree bend, with one end smaller than the other. Apparently me mate who had the Senator, his 90 degree hose split and he couldn't get one anywhere, for love nor money. He had to get one made up from Samco.

Yeah, that's why I'd like a spare set. Although mine are in good order, there's only one thing worse than a rad hose splitting and spurting boiling water all over the engine bay....and that's not being able to get hold of a replacement!!!

Definitely agree with you Mark. I got a spare set for my 2.0 slug.

I'm well impressed with the quality of the hoses in my 'K' reg. Diplomat; 20 years old and still look like new Smiley

Its the inside you can't see. The hoses on mine look good, but its always best to be prepared.

Actually, on the rare occasions that I've taken one off, the insides look perfect also Smiley

That said, I carry a fairly comprehensive set of spares Wink

A wise move. Checked mine earlier in the year when I changed the coolant.

Mine looked good on the outside and the inside (as far down the ends as you can see), and mine are 23 years old. it's just the ends where you fit the jubilee clip; if I accidently over tighten them (which I'm always careful not to do) or if over time they get a slight 'nip' in them.

I mean, these hoses take a LOT of hammer in just one year never mind 23!! Fluctuating temperatures from very hot to very cold and everything inbetween. I guess after time the rubber is going to perish. I coated the outside of mine with a rubber polisher (like the stuff you use on tyres) it made the hoses shiny and protects from the outside....but once the hose got hot it must've evaporated  Sad

I'll still put this stuff on in the future to keep the rubber supple as part of a maintenance routine.
