Pump prices have a lot to answer for. Many good big engine cars cannot sell due to it. I seen a Craker of an Audi A6 come into a yard in Aberdeen. Big engine petrol model but with the full works. No damage, the yard paid silly money for it, but once it goes over the gate, not for sale and scrap. Real shame. Government wants us all to drive Eco friendly cars now. But, I must say I am enjoying the monster I have at present. Hell, for a 9 year old car, it gave the driver of a new Jaguar 4 door a he'll of a fright. He could not catch up!

Yes Melinx, that right. I did do the arithmetic but in the mid 1990s, before my first Carlton, I deduced that executive cars are good value secondhand. Thats because they have quite often been well looked after (no expense spared by owner or company) and they are cheap because most people who want a big car can afford a new one so not much demand secondhand. I cannot remember the annual mileage I was doing, quite high, but it still worked out cheaper. About 5 years ago I got given a Peugeot 105. All I did was the cambelt and MOT. But then I added up the annual cost of insurance, tax, MOT and a bit for maintenance. Transpired that mileage wise if I used it for 10 out of 12 months and the Blue carlton for the other two months of the year I would break even on costs. So I decided not to run two cars and just reduced the mileage I did in the Carlton by not being an unpaid taxi service. In other words the difference in economy was not enough to warrant two cars. But also not really a significant part of my total costs. One option is a gas conversion of the Carlton. Not sure if this is reliable. I can guess that once enough people do it the government are bound to slap more fuel duty on gas, look how diesel has crept up over the years. If I was doing a massive mileage I might get a diesel second car. If I did go small it would be very small and I would get the biggest roof box available . But I already have a medium sized one for the Carlton estate - camping trips .

Yes, it is sad especially after reading your replies. I'm almost tempted to keep it..... no I musn't . I've been driving a Fiat Doblo JTD (diesel) for carry stuff about (don't laugh) then decided to take the Carlton out again and cripes, does it bring a smile to my face. Had a blast up the road from work with colleague in his beemer and he doesn't hang about. Well he was suitably shocked as he disappeared in my rear view mirror.

How about ditching the Fiat, selling the GSi and buying a Carlton estate? I got an estate and you won't believe what you can carry in the back. You could hold a united nations conference in the boot space with the back seats down.

Ian, yes the Gumtree phone is correct (07545534874). As discussed I am about on Sunday, Saturday too. Chassis Rails are perfect which I understand from Von_Opal is a weak point on many. The arches have been welded but I have to say very solid arc welding painted in red. You can tell by the arc welding lines! Still, it's all the more solid for it. Von_Opal did a fabulous job on the engine as well as painting and polishing the alloy cam covers. Please come for a test drive. The exhast note is especially nice.

It would be worth restoring. No corrosion anywhere, plus had brand new chain guides (all 3) plus Peter Harrison chains, gas flowed head & manifold + Jetex exhaust.

No, sorry mate, the guides are already fitted to the red Gsi above, which replaced these rather sorry looking guides. I don't own the car any longer but I understand from Chris that the bloke I sold it to, sold to someone else a couple of weeks ago, who has now put a rod through the crankcase. The guy obviously didn't know that it had a Will Reeve ABS Mk3 chip in it (no rev limitation) & revved it 'till it blew up. Sad, but very much worth fixing as it's a perfect Gsi.
