Aircon - No blower motor

99.9% of the time its down to this bit

It's a resistor pack that controls the voltage to the motor to allow a range of speeds - it can be found in front of the fan motor mounted vertically in the heater box and is held in with two screws.

This might help location and the part number for a new one may be readable (or may not!!) 90230931

So I just buy a new one fit it and job done? - Actually no I wouldn't advise that - you would be wasting your money in most cases.

The unit in most cases is fine just this bit is broken

Continued in summary section so jump to that

No Aircon - No Blower motor

99.9% of the time its down to this bit

It's a resistor pack that controls the voltage to the motor to allow a range of speeds - it can be found piggy backed on top of the fan motor in the heater box and is clipped on.

So I just buy a new one fit it and job done - Actually no I wouldn't advise that - you would be wasting your money in most cases.

The unit in most cases is fine just this bit is broken

Summary

So in both cases I'm just talking about the bit the red arrow is pointing to

So what is it? - It's a thermal overload resistor

What does it do? - For years and years nothing - but then it breaks when the motor is old and sucks a bit to much current/Amps (it's a use once part)

So why can't I fit a new one - Cos it will fail quicky just like the original has done recently due to the blower motor being a bit old and drawing more current and Vauxhall won't give you your money back but will say it's your blower motor that needs to be replaced

So what can I do?

Fix the problem

Get your self a little section of heatshrink or some insulation tape and a household wire joining block (you know the brass or steel blocks that have two little screws to tighten down on a wire and make a join)

Cut the thermal overload resistor in half at the middle of the blob

Break the ceramic away till you are left with two wire ends

Join the two with the chocolate block

Insulate from contact with any metal parts or damp

Fit and forget it.

Oh and the other 0.01% it's down to the switch not working but that doesn't need much explaination does it?

On second thoughts - For a Carlton ONLY!

I don't think they will be high enough resolution but if you right click and save as you should be able to view them on your PC and read em OK

Edited to Add

One important point

The information above only relates to total failure of the blower fan motor - if you've just lost a speed or two then replace the part above - it is however your choice if you modify a new one to save you having to pull it all apart later

Good work Blippi.......

Two points

1. would be better in electrical

2. Title needs to be "No Fan Speeds - AC & Non AC"

I am now slightly confused........ my fan only has full speed now, all other positions on the wheel have no effect. So, it's either full on (noisy) or off.   This has a knock-on effect of making the aircon not as efficient as it should be as the air rushing through doesn't have much time to cool down! Which is the part I should be replacing please?

Previously you had?

No Speeds?

If this is the case then not only the thermal overload had popped but the internal circuits had too

New one time I think but before i did that I'd just check that the switch was still OK with a multimeter
