An auto which is what I have been looking for but to far away in the midlands. And I'm also recovering from an op so unable to travel. Lots of miles though. I think I'll stay with the lower mileage club manual I have till a CD or CDX auto comes up.........if ever.

That's the thing with these fine automobiles, they're getting harder to find in a good condition. After seeing the difficulty you're having to get the model with the spec you want, I'm glad I didn't mind what model mine is, as long as its auto.

Our Carltons are rarer than some of the Italian exotica. If you want exclusivity, buy a Carlton!

The spec car I want is certainly around but rarely comes on the market. As I've said before, unfortunately one comes on the market and somebody drives by, sees it and buys it. Its then driven into the ground. I've been watching for some years and with all the internet advertising you have to be prepared to get in the car and go. Unfortunately experience has suggested that when people say they will hold it until you come is not true.

Very difficult to believe people nowadays. When us 'older' guys say something they stick to it. Sadly not the case now...............

Does anybody know what happened to the estate in Scotland with the lpg conversion?

I was lucky with mine as the seller was genuine. Its a long trek from Pontypridd to Dover, leaving at 0530 hours. The seller didn't want a deposit but he kept his word and held it for me. We only spoke on the fone once, other than that is was communication via text message.

I'm glad I bought it. I was lucky as I had the parts to spec my GLi up.

Since September '08 when I first bought a Carlton, I have never seen another on the road anywhere in south Wales, never mind one for sale.

I will certainly keep my eyes open for you for a CD or CDX estate auto.

I dont think its impossible to convert a manual to an auto. But it does seem that there are lots of potentially unforseen little things to remember. I plan to be ready to go auto-manual. I will take all the manual bits of my Blue CDx manual incase I need them for the Rioja CD auto one day (e.g. when the computer goes extinct). So I will discover what I needed to take from the Blue manual probably 3 years after I strip the manual and scrap it !. I dont really want to mess about with the Rioja one though so it will only happen if I have to.

@Pete, somewhere on this forum I think its Johnny A, has done a conversion from one to the other. The consenus is, buy an auto to start with. Apparently it is a bitch of a job.

OK so its got to be easier to convert a club to a CD / CDx then ?. At least that can be done gradually I suppose. I cannot talk as I probably could not do it anyway.

Most people like a manual especiall you youngsters (I'm a pensioner)and I was hoping somebody might exchange a high spec auto for the one owner club estate I have with an amazing documented history.

Our well known MOT tester in Kent says its very solid underneath if anybody is interested. I've also had a good look. Sidemembers solid and the rear quarter panels are just about perfect. It was at the 'big meet' a while back - see the photos reg L954... Currently in the garage whilst I get over my op. MOT till oct 2012. Wife prefers to drive our other car, an auto.

If I was a bit younger and it was a spec I wanted, it would be the perfect estate to spend just a few quid on to make it a real good one. I've rebuilt 3 classic cars and the club estate is the one to work on without all the hassle and expense of stripping down and welding. NO welding is required.

Anybody tempted? Manual club estate plus some cash for a high spec auto estate?

I'll either find one or give up next year as a knee problem is getting worse.

I'm not against aftermarket rims, but they don't look right on the Carlton. Or is it just me?

Don't give up, Keith.

I must admit I'm beginning to give up. I've done all the long trips looking at cars which have been rubbish and even sold before I got there. What do I do if one comes up 200 miles away? Been there and wasted my time. Its been about 4 years now I have been looking. Its all luck really. You just have to be in the right place at the right time. I think there was a good one in Scotland, the lpg one, but 400 miles away.

I think the only way now is to find a rough one and do it up like lots are doing on TC. Unfortunately I'm getting too old for that and recent major surgery suggests I will not be able to rebuild any more cars. Got all the workshop equipment including 3 types of welding equipment but I think I've missed out.

Still, I have a nice club manual estate so should be thankful.

If one does come up and its nearer me than you, then I will view the car and email you the picures. Its the least I can do to help.

Now recovering from a major op and having lost a lot of weight with less stress on the knee, think I will be able to continue driving the manual lub estate I have and being 100% solid with full history I think I'll give up the search for the high spec auto estate.... ..............probably would still be tempted. So no more wingeing about not being able to find one.

As I've a search engine going on the internet, I'll post any that come up for sale.

What happened to the expensive LPG estate in Scotland? Did anybody buy it? Is the owner a member of TC?

Anybody know anything about a really immaculate one that was at a classic car show in Clacton on sea some time back.? TC member?

How about a MG ZTT auto. Great car in either V6 or Diesel form. Some great bargains around.

Totally agree. Other car is a Rover 75 auto tourer diesel. Smashing car and one of the best I've had. Sadly the BMW diesel although lasting for ever is a bit rough. They all have a vibration frequency around 1800rpm. Not one of the best diesels despite BMW suggesting it is - & people listening!

If i bought another it would be a MG ZT-T. Dont tempt me............

Man of Kent, I tried to PM you but not sure if it worked, I am thinking of passing my diamond 24v on too many cars and a house to build!, if you are interested get in touch. I am not giving away but I will challenge you to find a better lower mileage car of its type. 07717 861 815
