*Ahem* Enix village, Spain, miles from Murph!

Went to get another set of keys cut for the old girl the other day... the guy took them away then came straight back and told me my ignition key had a transponder in it?Huh?
Told me to go back, take the transponder out and try and start the car. I did that and it started no problem.
He told me that keys like that were only made with transponders after '95.
Looks like I have a post 95 ignition barrel then... I was plenty glad there was no need for the transponder as the cost of a new key was around the 60 euro mark, without it, only 12 euro for the pair.
Got me thinking though, did they ever fit any Carltons with security chips/transponders?

In case anyone is interested these are the numbers from the chip in the key

I never heard of a Carlton with a chip Jon.
IIRC yours is a '92 J so it's not even one of the latest ones on the road.

My Diplomat was a 92 J and that wasn't chipped. The set of locks and keys I had as replacements from Day weren't, and as far as I'm aware my 93 L GLi hasn't either got a chip in the key.

Late cavs and all vectras had the same key and had transponders

Are the locks of the lesser cavs and vectras interchangeable with the superior Carlton? If so, has someone fitted them?

@ Murph, yeah mate that's what I thought which is why I was surprised when he brought it back!
Seems it's the same key blade as the later Omega's, a '105' blade. So at some stage a previous owner had a key cut for the ignition or a new ignition barrel and key cos it's a separate key for all the other locks and they gave him a more modern version (post 95). Like I said, much cheaper for me for another set.

Yeah we have seen a Carlton barrel fitted into an Omega so I'm sure it must be possible the other way around.
I would guess that a previous owner got a barrel and key from a scrappy Omega.

If it comes to it I'm pretty sure we still have a full set from the '89 estate that we  broke a while back.

Not much point really .the barrel is the same.
to make use of the transponder function ,you'd need the pick up ring ,ECU and modify the loom, not worth doing because there's plenty of aftermarket immobilizer systems.
