Looking good Alex Wink some top quality work going on there Smiley
Some excellent work going on here, how come your ditching the standard tank for a race setup?  Track action maybe Huh Grin

Thanks for all those comments, I'm just learning as I go on. I must admit I do things, then after finishing come up with a better way, but this is the first time I've ever done any custom work.

The fuel tank has leaked since I bought the the car, fill it beyond 7 Gallon was a waste of time, lol. I need a bigger fuel pump, I could have used the original tank and converted it for a Bosch 044, but I thought this would be more fun.  But yes, this car will not be a daily driver, so who cares about a big boot.

Im almost positive thats Ian Hickmans old car, that had  lot of money spent on it a few years ago, and was well sorted for its time, surprised to see it has rusted so much!! Undecided

When I bought the car, it was 'an excellent example', 'loads spent' and a 'Club car' according to the advert and I was blinded by the fact everything appeared to work and at a glance looked solid.

It is easily the worst car I have ever bought in terms of things wrong with it and things that totally annoyed me. At one point I wanted to drive it to the scrap metal man, and forget about it. I would say it was worth less than half what I paid.  But you cant worry about that, just use it as a Guinea-pig for car modification.

Thats the trouble, people throw around words such as 'mint' and 'best example around' yada yada and it turns out to be far from it. Bought a part of someone on here fairly recently under the impression of was 'mint' and it's far from it Sad

Thats a crying shame buddy, the car was owned at one time, by a manager at cobra cars in london, he spent loads on it, Ian spent loads on it,(new clutch, exhaust front struts were adjustable spax)  it was chipped by BBR and had a large bore throttle body on it,did have a stainless strutbrace but Ian may have taken it off before he sold it
had a weird back panel on it but that apears to be gone now looking at your pics, never seen another before or since,HAVE GOT HIS EMAIL ADDY IF YOU WANT TO ASK THE QUESTIONS?

I'm glad that you pressed on and kept the car. Yeah, I know you feel like throwing the towel in. We've all been there at some time or other. You've done a top job, so keep it going. As Del Boy says, "you know it makes sense."

It's already as low as I would dare run it, that oil pan looks exposed.

Interesting to know the history of the car, it still has many of the featured mentioned.  What is a back panel??? The exhaust system was completely blocked when I bought the car, it would only rev to around 4000rpm, one look at the tail pipe while running confirmed the problem.

Now I'm on the hunt, I'm after a senator spoiler, any one want to swap for the rather large one fitted to the car now?

Yeah the 24v does have a low sump, I went through 3 before having one modified so it was about 1 1/2 shallower. Now it's fine as it's 1/2 inch higher than the subframe and front ARB which offer protection

I now have a Senator Spoiler,  Happy days. Came with a boot for £25.

Problem is my boot is gonna have holes in it for the big wing , So I will fit the senny spoiler to my diplomat's boot, then swap them over,  it will need a spray anyway.

Not much has happened since the weathers been cold and nights drawn in.  But today I put the old girl in for a MOT, passed with flaying colours, no advisories.

Happy Days

The only down side, driving it again reminded me how slow the GSI is. Even with the GSI stripped out my SAAB 2.3 turbo would kill it.

Progress is slow as it always over the winter when your without a double garage (I am drawing up plans to build a double though, cant wait). I am buying materials to make a bulkhead between the boot and the cabin, very sensible when you have fuel in the boot. I also want make Aluminium door cards for the back.

I have also settled on using the Diplomat 15 inch wheel as they fit, look cool and I cant afford anything else.  Just to be stupid I have bought 195/50 tyres for them,  the car is going to be low,  Hence I drove round to the biggest speed bumps I could find to make sure I can still clear them.

I have also been getting rid of the Central-Locking, Speakers, Electric Antenna, and others in a bid to lose weight. myself and a few work mates are going to Santa Pod in March for some 1/4 mile racing. I could take the SAAB 9000 and beat everyone with a 14 sec but they are insisting on the Carlton, so it wont be as easy.  I might be able to get into the 16's if I'm lucky.

I have been shopping, well I went shopping last february and ordered an aluminium seat. 11 months later it arrived. I could have bought a Kirkey seat but I was not that impressed, this on the other hand is amazing quality.  This is the Pro Drag Plus seat from Butler, and can't wait to get it fitted to the Carlton.

For me this type of seat is real important, I'm 6foot8 and the head room in the Carlton is crap. I can fix this seat about an inch off the floor.

Ok so fitting the Seat, First I made seat rails with 6mm thick, 2 inch angle aluminium.  At the moment I want to use the standard seatbelt, so made a 1 inch Boss and had it welded in to the rail.  All the fasteners are grade 10 high strength items.

Once seat rails were in place I mocked-up the seat, tried it for size and marked out the holes once I was happy with the position.

the seating position is far back and low, finally I have head room and my legs are more comfortable.

So I could still reach the steering wheel I have extended the steering boss, then got on the sewing machine to make a velour sleeve  to make it look stock.

Put on the seat cover, now it looks the part (obviously that is my opinion, and know this wont be to everyones taste)

The car had the a dropping head-liner. It was a mess, so I took it out, stripped off the old head liner so I had the fibre structure remaining.

I then used black velour material with form backing and proper head-liner spray clue.  A few hours later I had a rejuvenated head-liner in a much better colour. The black matches the seat perfectly.

2 days until She is taxed, I cant wait!

Isn't the seat a tad on the uncomfortable side? It looks the part, yes, but it must play havoc with one's farmer giles  Shocked

I like what you have done with the headlining  Cool

The headlining job is actually a messy horrible job, but cheap, the Material was £40 and Glue £10, the difference is massive, very happy with the outcome.

I don't drive this car around Europe, so I can live with a firm seat, it is contoured to fit tightly and hold you in.  When you order, you have to specify Hip width, chest width and incline angle.  I had to wait over a year for delivery, from America, via container ship (Several months in customs for good measure).

Loving what you've done with this, 6 foot 8!!! I understand the seat but have to agree it doesn't look very comfortable for the long haul!

Ok, latest progress:
Take one senator bootlid
Removed spoiler
Cut the chrome beading part off the bottom of the spoiler with a hacksaw
Drill holes in Carlton bootlid at correct locations
Fit spoiler with fasteners and addhesive
Sand and prep for paint
Spray using cheap trade satin black spraycans
Put on a couple of stickers for fun

Thankfully the stupid lotus spoiler is gone! Lotus spoilers look great, but only when you have the whole lotus kit to go with it.
