Boot lock problem

Hi everyone.I'm a new member and this is my first post. Before I start replacing parts I need to know if there is a common fault with the boot lock.
I have a 93 model year Carlton saloon with 2 (maybe related) boot locking problems. 1st is that the boot will not lock with the central locking (all 4 doors do lock ok). The 2nd problem is that when I lock the boot using the key, the boot locks but the key will not turn a full 90 degrees so I am unable to take the key out which then defeats the object. I have used WD40 around the lock itself from inside the boot as well as through the key hole, but this made no difference. When trying to lock the boot using the key in the boot lock the central locking does activate all 4 doors as it should when the car is not deadlocked.
With the aid of an assistant locking and unlocking the car from the drivers door while I'm standing by the boot I can confirm that the lock motor does move the lever that attaches to the boot lock to some degree, but it does not turn the lock round as far as I can using the key in the boot lock. So either way I can not lock the boot.
Has anyone ever had a similar problem? Do I need to change the lock assembly itself or the central locking motor or both? Or is there some maintanance I can do on the boot lock assembly?
Any suggestions will be greatly received.

firstly where are you?
secondly welcome to T.C.
if i remember correctly it will probably be a problem with the solenoid being jammed or at least partially so
if you disconnect the rod from the solenoid to the lock and then see if the lock operates correctly if it does you need a new/replacement one!

Thank you, I will give this a try first.
I am in Gloucestershire. This is the second Carlton I have owned. I purchased my first one in 92, it was a C-reg 2.0L GL Saloon. For a while now I have been looking for a modern classic as a second car and even though I was looking for something from the late 70's / early 80's I came across the Carlton I now own as it is in fairly good condition and had very good history with it.
