Hi, I've been on this forum for quite some time now, but shamefully never registered....until now. I've got a 1989 3.0 12V auto, which is currently on SORN. The previous owner was going to scrap it, so I bought it to save it from the scrap man, and hopefully put it back on the road. The car has only done 75,000 miles from new and has always been well serviced and the body waxoiled, so no real rust issues. It is in very good condition for its age, though it does have a starting problem, which I am hoping someone on here may be able to help with. Engine turns over enthusiastically but does not fire up unless you disconnect the air flow meter. This causes engine to start straight away but only firing on 4 or 5 cylinders. You must immediately reconnect air flow meter or engine dies. Engine will then run normally after about 5 minutes of misfiring. After reading through some other starting issues on here I'm not sure where the fault really lies, and I dont really want to spend money changing stuff that isnt faulty.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Grin

Coolant Temperature Sensor!

I believe it's located close to the thermostat housing and will have a small plug on it.  A replacement will cost you less than a tenner (I think) and is as easy to fit as it could possibly be - unplug, unscrew the old one with a deep 19mm socket, screw in the new one, plug in and go!

Cheers mate,  Grin

After reading other posts I was hoping that would be the problem, and they are cheap enough so I've just ordered one off ebay.
Thanks for your help

Could just be a dirty spade terminal on the CTS, but as said, cheap enough. Wink

CTS has completely sorted the poor starting problem Grin Grin Grin, thank you very much for your help, but highlighted something else. Fuel lines are completely shot and leaking in half a dozen places (under the fixing clips) Angry. Never noticed it before. Try and get it sorted next week.

bloody fiddly job had to do this so often on mine in the past its unreal

when you have got the old hoses off use a small smear of vaseline to help slip the new fuel line on but be careful of the little hoses on the injectors themselves split one change the lot!!

if that does happen the injectors are held in place by long thin bolts i suggest that you tighten them up a fraction before undoing them as they have a habit of snapping when you refit them copper grease the threads first just in case you need to remove them again for some reason!

also not far from you arew a couple of our members might be worth giving them a shout!
