Hello everyone. I have searched for help and this seems to be the best place. My Carlton windows have stopped working. ( All 4 ) No light in the buttons are on. Upon advise from I friend I have replaced the buttons by the handbrake & the loom ( plug & play ) easy job for a novice. Still nothing. I can't hear anything like motors moving etc its just dead. Any ideas for someone who is clueless,
Kind regards,
Martin

If the above post contains spelling mistakes / grammatical errors / poor use of the quote function / a very weak retort, or is generally shyte; it's because I'm feked on a cocktail of drugs, homebrew and carb cleaner.sorry

All fuses ok. Like I said I am a novice. My friend mechanic said is was the buttons & loom on passenger side which I replaced today. I don't want to keep hassling him & would like to try to find the fault myself, will check tomorrow for power. The carlton was my grandads & I cant bear to part with it but driving with all the windows up is no fun in the heat lately lol. Great site & quick reply, Thanks

There are some more 'plug & play' connections inside the B-pillars of the car (where the seatbelts are fitted).
You can see the loom coming through the pillar to the rear door via a rubber sleeve. You have to remove the inner trim panel and seatbelt barrel at the bottom to gain reasonable access, but you can get to the connection if you pull the rubber sleeve/grommit out from the pillar (careful not to pull too much of the loom out).
Not guaranteeing this is the problem as these connections are firmly pushed together and would seem unlikely to come apart if previously untouched, (and I'm not sure if this would knock out the use of all four windows) but it's one thing you could have a look at as part of an elimination process.

Firstly.... welcome to TC. Second... where abouts are you? We may have a member nearby who could help. The first step would be to check that you have power at the switches as Dave said, then if you have power move onto the door looms and see if you have power there.
Personally though, I reckon your problem lies under the carpet in the passenger footwell. Have a look under there and look for two red wires that join into one. That join will have corroded so that no power will get through.

I had exactly this problem a few weeks ago. As Murph says, I looked in the passenger footwell at the clump of wires right down on the floor (where they can get wet). Once unwrapped I found two groups of red wires joined there and they had terrible corrosion and were falling apart, like this. I cut them back and a little while later with some solder and heatshrink they looked like this and all of the windows were back to normal again.

Update, removed passenger floor carpet etc and would you believe it. It looked just like those pictures. Two red cables corroded away. Two new pieces of cable now soldered in and windows are back working. Excellent site and information. Like I said I have no idea & would never have found that. Thanks to everyone. Also if anyone knows where I can get a n/s/f indicator lens from let me know. i have looked for one for 12 months now, bought two wrong ones and given up. With the car being my grandads who passed away in 2002 I can't part with it so I am slowly doing the jobs it needs, bodywork, whining diff etc so I am glad to have found this site for info, Thanks very much again, Martin

Glad to have been a help mate. The indicators do crop up on ebay from time to time so keep an eye on there, meanwhile I'll see what we have in stock here. Where are you based?

Not trying to "steal" the thread, but When I baught the car, back in february, all el-windows worked. After a while though, the two in front started to fail. At first the left window would go up and down in a notchy kind of way, and after a while it stopped completely. The same thing happened to the right window. The rear windows seams fine though..
Could this be the same problem as yours?

Well, I've checked now, and I can't seam to find any corroded wires.. Instead of creating a new thread, I might aswell just write on this one.
Has anybody else had the same problem? That a couple of the windows won't go up or down?

Yep, sure did. The right front window started working again, but it was slow and notchy... Has anybody had problems with el-windows before?

yup the fix above was discovered by myself around 5 years ago on my purple 3.0cdx i have since repaired around 5 more cars my method differs slightly in that i use a short section of copper tube which adds length and strength to the repair so passengers feet cannot break the joint again!!

Check the control unit thats attached to the passenger side switch - drivers side on yours cosmo. If you have a spare switch try changing it over.
