Water seeping into a Carlton boot is a common problem and I suspect like mine it gets in just behind the plastic trim that separates the rear wing from the rear roof support pillar. This just happens to be a bit close to the multi disc changer. However I would also suggest that the CD reader lens needs cleaning. Exercise extreme care when doing so and I advise you seek expert advice beforehand. Good Luck!

Wow, do people still use these CD players?

I thought they'd all died by now......

Just change the thing for a decent player and have done with it! you'll never have to worry about it again!

Yep - if it ain't broke why fix it - rather spend money on other things ;-)

They aren't bad units - nice sound and apart from the FM problem which seems a bit patchy accross the years and is normally fixable.

Yes, I think they're good units too.

I've got mine running 100% now with thanks to 'Mezzy' for sending me another front pop out panel to make one good one up out of the two Grin

Also, for those who want their Carlton to become a future 'Classic', then keeping things as original as possible is a must!

Sorry, I just don't see the point in keeping the unit when there's better things available, but hey:

- I don't like boot changers
- I like my music and the standard grundig can't run amps well.
- If the boot changer was still in my boot the CDs would skip like crazy cos there'd be 3 subs right next to it...
- It looks pants and is very basic IMO.
- I'm a great lover of good music in a car - I am a DJ and I do like it loud with a full range of frequencies.

So for me, the standard unit and changer just ain't an option in my car.

A good series of points well made and explained

For every one I am the absolute opposite

- I like boot changers (they are tucked out of the way and teh head unit looks like a rad cassette so isn't a target for low lifes)
- I like my music but I don't like amps and stuff.
- It looks OE and does exactly what it should.
- I'm not a great lover of any music in a car - I am not a DJ and I like to hear the engine and the exhaust at it's full range of frequencies.

I left out the one about it skipping cos with no amps i'm never gonna notice!!!

try cleaning it , but if it doesnt do it when its not so loud i'd say it was something to do with the draw on the power . i had to change stereo's cos my old one didnt have the amp power and it started to do the same

I know whats rong, it isnt a cleaning issue had this on our other carly, the changer sits under the right speaker and gives off vibrations which cause the cd to jump the louder it gets, try removing the changer from the braket and place it on the floor to see if that stops  the jumps, also try bubble wrap(or something soft to absorb kinetic from speaker) placed on top of the changer, see if that helps. some changers do it some dont (jump cds i meen Tongue) i was speaking to and audio guy and he reckons tis the breakdown of the laser.

« Reply #21 on: February 22, 2007, 09:14:09 PM »

An interesting subject I have to say.

My boot mount Grundig changer has jumped (or rather to be correct - misread) from time to time ever since I bought my car new in August 1993. However I have found that this has always been on certain CD's especially those that I have "burned" from originals - (better known as "security backups") Wink
Cleaning the disc/s has always rectified this. I have never found that volume or vibration has contributed to this symptom as it also misreads at low volume and when the car is stationary.

The laser reader will get dirty and is probably the largest single contributer to a "jump" or "misread" and this should of course be cleaned carefully. If you leave your CD's in the changer for a long time these will get coated with a fine film of dirt created by the airflow through the boot mixed with traffic and road grime particles.

Finally old father time will take its toll as these changers have been around on most Carltons for a minimum of 13 years and have covered circa 150,000 bumpy miles. So if yours still works ok then that aint bad going really. Undecided

I'm really pleased with my Grundig system as a car player, it's robust, has a reasonable sound and is easy to operate. Still - I'm pretty easy to please anyway  Grin

As an aside - has anyone had problems with the FM cutting in and out and if so have they managed to fix it?

Mine is doing this and it's bl**dy irritating.  Angry
