24 valves breathing pure heaven into the thing

« on: May 04, 2011, 02:20:03 PM »

I was searching for Omega at Wikipedia today. Wiki says that the 3.0 24v have a top speed of 168 mph! That can't be right, can it? I thought the top speed was 149 mph, but I have seen videos on YT of stock 3.0 24v doing almost 170 mph... I'm confused  Huh

205bhp isn't physically enough for anything much over 150mph considering the shape of a carlton.

I managed a little over 150 on a 'private motorway-like' road coming back from Billing last year.

A couple of points (in my humble opinion)

1. Wikipedia isn't really a 100% reliable source of information and things can get misprinted and in some cases exaggerated on there (and it stays misprinted until someone reports and corrects it.)

2.
Quote
I have seen videos on YT of stock 3.0 24v doing almost 170 mph

...a speedo reading can be out by approximately 10mph (possibly more at that speed), so 'almost 170mph' could quite easily be seen as 'almost 160mph'...which may realistically be 155mph...which, in turn is more than likely.  Grin

I did 159mph on the sat nav down a big hill in the black GSI with some bigger rear tyres.

Aah - that reminds me! how accurate are sat-navs as a tool for measuring speed?
Mine reads about 5mph less than the speedo on my Vectra.

Sat navs are pretty much perfect as they're calculating distance/time. I think the GSI speedo was reading about 167mph at that speed. The only problem with sat navs is if you're trying to maintain a constant speed they're slower to update than a speedo so you can be speeding up and slowing down without knowing.

Had the barge round the clock many a time but the bit that i like best is how smooth it rides at high speed, you could have a picnic behind the wheel and still do three figures Cheesy

It's a shame we don't have a long enough road to reach 150 over here... Well, maybe not Grin I really don't want to ruin my, or others life while trying to reach the top speed..

Not a question of how long the road is, it's how quick you can get to that speed! Wink

I know, but every stock Carlton 3.0 24v would need a pretty long straight to reach it's top speed.

Plod clock read 159.
Bugger all wind, cool October day, slight mist (good for thickening up the mixture!) and run at around 10 am.
Couldn't do it again as runway was booked solid.......................by the Rozzers from West Yorkshire.  Shocked
I sat and watched them for a bit, they were playing at boxing a car in. Used lots of old Peugeots and Omega B's as fodder.
Jolly entertaining to be honest! Grin

I reckon that's right Wink

Many years ago (before the M6 became blocked solid) I travelled daily to the Land Rover plant; I had a fuel consumption/mpg instrument fitted in my Rover 2.2 TC.

I noticed that on mornings such as you describe, the engine always seemed to run much better but the fuel consumption was always marginally higher Huh

Talking of speeds and speedometer accuracy, I got stopped on the M62 almost a quarter of a century ago, in an '85 C reg Fiesta 1.3L. Totally standard car. Had the needle at 110mph and cops had me at 108mph. Back then it was 3 points and a fine, no ban.

A BMW 735i E38 is electronically limited to 155mph. Could I get the speedo needle past 155? Nope. I tried and couldn't succeed. The speedo can't have been far out, if it was.

I remember Motor doing a road test on a Porsche 928 and it listed shown mph and actual mph. The speedo was bang on all the way.

I know of a standard Senator 24v that had a rebuilt engine, in standard form, make 232 bhp on a rolling road. Got to 150 mph and it was still pulling, no where near flat out.

Then again it would be different with different air temp, air pressure, humidity.............. rolling road results are great to compare on the day with another car on the same RR, but by and large, you can +/- 20% sometimes.

Often in Total Vauxhall folk are complaining that last time it made xxx amount and now its only made xxx bhp. Where has it gone? I guess they forget about humidity etc.
